HAMILTON, Ohio – Northern Kentucky's women's tennis fell to the eight-time reigning Mid-American Conference regular-season champion Miami (Ohio) on Sunday morning. With the 6-1 setback, the Norse fall to 1-3 on the season, while the RedHawks advance to 2-6.
Match Notables
- A short-handed Norse squad gave way to a pair of opening points to the RedHawks, as NKU was unable to put a lineup in for the No. 3 doubles match or the No. 6 singles spot, with Miami taking both by walkover.
- The RedHawks won the doubles point with 6-2 wins in both the No. 1 and 2 spots.
- Miami clinched the match with wins in No. 3, 4 and 5 singles by way of a trio of straight-set victories.
- NKU saw its most competitive matchups at the end in the No. 1 and 2 singles spots, which both went to a deciding set.
- In the No. 1 spot, freshman Margita Sunjic took down Nelli Ponomareva by winning the first set in extra games, 7-5, before the RedHawk retaliated with a 6-3 win in the second. Sunjic was dominant in the tiebreak, sealing her win 10-2 in the third set.
- Klara Skopac went up against Anzhelika Shapovalova in No. singles, with Skopac taking the first set 6-4 before Shapovalova answered with a 6-4 win of her own to push the tiebreak. Miami earned its final point of the day, with a 10-3 deciding set.
- The women's team returns to action on March 9-10, when the team will take a trip to the East Coast to take on Fairfield and Hofstra.
