HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky's men's tennis hits the court after nearly a month-long hiatus to host in-state foe Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, March 21. First serve from Five Seasons Sports Club in Crestview Hills, Kentucky, is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Norse dominated in a 7-0 win over cross-county foe Thomas More on Feb. 24, surrendering just five games throughout 12 sets of singles action. Senior
Court Clark moved into the No. 1 spot for the first time this season, claiming a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Cameron Shi. NKU also saw a pair of expeditious victories out of its freshman class, with
Andrew Niehaus dismantling Derrick Kwok in matching 6-0 sets while
Chris Murray didn't drop a game against Mike Schwarz. The Norse also swept all three doubles matchups, led by
Adrian Isache and
Blaine Carr with a 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot.
SCOUTING EASTERN KENTUCKY: The Colonels have become top contenders in the Ohio Valley Conference, falling just shy of defending their title from the 2015 season and recording the fifth in program history in the 2016 OVC Championship. EKU enters Tuesday sporting a 10-5 record, with losses to two common opponents of the Norse this season. The Colonels were blanked by then-No. 15 Kentucky, 7-0, and also fell to Abilene Christian in a 6-1 decision, a team that the Norse defeated in a 5-2 dual on Jan. 28. Key players for EKU include Ramon van Flymen and Diego Asis, who have been playing together in the No. 1 doubles spot for the Colonels in recent matches. Van Flymen holds down the No. 1 singles spot for the Colonels, and was part of EKU history last season when he was one half of a doubles team that qualified for the NCAA Tournament, a first for the program. Asis has been racking up the accolades as the two-time defending OVC Player of the Week and has dropped just one singles match this spring as a strong contributor in EKU's back half of the singles lineup. NKU last squared off with the Colonels on Feb. 27, 2015, which saw EKU defend its home court in a 6-1 victory.
