Kelley leads NKU to doubleheader split at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI – Pat Kelley allowed just one run in 7.0 innings pitched to lead the Northern Kentucky baseball team to a 3-2 win in game one of a doubleheader against Cincinnati. The Norse fell in game two, 13-7, at Marge Schott Stadium as the Bearcats claimed the series victory in the final nonconference set of the 2017 slate.

Northern Kentucky moves to 8-13 while Cincinnati now sits at 12-11.

GAME ONE | Northern Kentucky 3, Cincinnati 2

Kelley, NKU's starter, held UC to four hits and one run across a team season-high 7.0 innings pitched. He led the Norse to their 3-2 win in a pitchers' duel.

At the Plate
  • TJ Alas went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
  • The Norse had eight total hits, split among seven players.
  • Will Haueter and Jake Richmond had one hit and one run apiece.
On the Mound
  • Kelley fanned a career-high six batters and walked one.
  • Two of the four total hits UC managed against Kelley came in the first inning, along with the only run he would allow. After the first inning, just five Bearcats reached base against Kelley throughout the rest of his outing, one of which was on an error.
  • Cameron Ross earned his team-leading third save after tossing the final 1.2 innings. An inherited run crossed against Ross, which would be pinned on Norse reliever Seth Rosenberg. Ross did not allow a hit and struck out one.
Key Moments
  • The Norse got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and never trailed. Richmond reached on a walk, advanced on a Haueter single and scored on an Alas double. Haueter then scored on a ground out.
  • UC responded with a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 2-1.
  • Kelley allowed just one hit over the next four frames and retired a stretch of nine-straight.
  • Alas improved to 2-for-2 with his second double of the day to lead off the fourth. He came around to score on a Kyle Colletta RBI single for the 3-1 NKU lead that would stick for the next four innings.
  • UC contested a run in the bottom of the eighth, which crossed on a groundout for the 3-2 result.
GAME TWO | Cincinnati 13, Northern Kentucky 7

A six-run fourth and four-run seventh from the Bearcats put the game out of reach of the Norse, who scored five runs across the final two innings in the nightcap.

At the Plate
  • Shane Paradis subbed in at shortstop in the sixth and clubbed his first collegiate hit, a two-run home run. He followed it up with a two-run double in the ninth as the freshman went 2-for-2 with a team-high four RBI.
  • Dominic Mercurio went 2-for-4 with a double while Ganns added a home run.
  • The Bearcats out-hit NKU, 14-10.
On the Mound
  • Three Norse pitchers saw action with starter Charlie Jerger absorbing the loss after throwing 3.2 innings.
  • Travis Rowland tossed 2.1 innings. He allowed four hits and two runs, one earned.
  • Joe Martin closed the game, contributing 2.0 innings with three hits and four runs, all unearned.
Key Moments
  • With one out in the top of the first, Ganns parked his second homer of the season over the right-field wall and on top of adjacent Fifth Third Arena for a 1-0 Norse advantage.
  • In the bottom of the second, UC scored on an RBI triple, then scored six runs on four hits including a three-run homer to take a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
  • A run-scoring double extended the Bearcat lead to 8-1 in the fifth as they went on to score at least on run in each of the next two innings.
  • Paradis went long for his two-run shot in the top of the eighth to cut the UC lead to 13-4.
  • NKU posted three runs in the top of the ninth as freshmen Preston Pilat and Paradis clubbed run-scoring doubles for the 13-7 result.
Norse Notes
  • The Norse improved to 4-2 in Kelley's starts.
  • Ross made his League-leading 13th appearance out of the bullpen in game one. In his last seven appearances, he has totaled 10.0 innings pitched and has posted a 0.00 ERA. The redshirt sophomore is 2-0 with a pair of saves in his last four outings.
  • Ganns' home run was just the second homer since the opening of Marge Schott Stadium in 2004 to sail to the roof of the Fifth Third Arena beyond the right-centerfield fence.
  • Northern Kentucky has 10 home runs in the last seven games.
  • NKU scored in the first inning in each game of the series.
