HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky's men's and women's tennis teams are set to hit the road for the final time of the regular season, traveling to Michigan for matches on Saturday and Sunday, April 15-16. The women will play Oakland on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET, while both squads will take on Detroit Mercy on Sunday with first serve at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: NKU's women's squad had a mid-week contest at nearby Cincinnati, falling 4-0 to the Bearcats on April 15. UC claimed the doubles point and went on to win in the No. 3, 4 and 6 singles matches to clinch the match. The Norse men are coming off a 5-2 win over Horizon League foe UIC. The Flames edged NKU in doubles competition, but the Norse surrendered just one singles match to take the victory.
SCOUTING OAKLAND: With the Golden Grizzlies fielding only a women's team, NKU's men will play just one match this weekend. Oakland has posted a 6-9 overall mark while going 2-2 in League play with wins over Green Bay and Milwaukee while falling to Youngstown State and Cleveland State. Allison Motea sits at the top of the lineup, but has a 2-8 record at the No. 1 singles spot. However, her previous win was a 6-4, 6-2 upset of YSU's Dominika Lackova, the reigning HL Player of the Year. When Oakland and NKU squared off last season, the Norse had a 4-3 win over the Golden Grizzlies, taking the doubles point before wins on courts 1, 2 and 6 sealed the win.
SCOUTING DETROIT MERCY: The Titan men have gone 2-1 against League opponents, taking down Youngstown State and Cleveland State while falling to Green Bay at home. UDM and NKU have one other common opponent on the year, as the Titans previously dropped a 4-3 decision to Dayton, a team that NKU bested 4-0 in February. The Titans' top singles player, Artem Vashenshnikov, enters the weekend riding a five-match winning streak. When NKU hosted Detroit Mercy a season ago, the Norse clinched a spot in the Horizon League Tournament with a 4-3 win after posting victories in doubles as well as the No. 1, 3 and 5 singles matches.
Detroit Mercy's women have split League play with setbacks to YSU and CSU following wins over Milwaukee and Green Bay. UDM's top singles player also enters the weekend with a winning streak, taking down her last three opponents in the No. 1 spot, including last season's HL Player and Freshman of the Year. Last year, the Titans clinched a 4-1 victory over the Norse, with NKU's
Klara Skopac claiming the lone point in the No. 1 singles match over Anna Davydova.
