Ganns propels @NKUNorseBSB to 8-1 win at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – NKU starting pitcher Trey Ganns held Ohio State to just three hits and one run in 5.0 innings pitched on Wednesday while also driving in four runs on a pair of doubles and a home run to lift the Northern Kentucky baseball team to an 8-1 win over the Buckeyes at Bill Davis Stadium.

Four Norse pitchers combined to allow six hits en route to the victory. NKU improves to 13-22 overall while OSU dips to 15-22.

At the Plate
  • Ganns' 3-for-5 showing with four RBI were both game-high marks. Each of his three hits were for extra bases. The junior drove in or scored five of NKU's eight runs.
  • The Norse out-hit Ohio State, 11-6, with Will Haueter and Dominic Mercurio posting two hits apiece. Mercurio added two RBI and a home run while Haueter had a pair of runs scored.
  • Brendan Alas and TJ Alas each drove in a run as Jake Richmond scored twice for the Norse.
On the Mound
  • Just three Buckeyes reached base against Ganns, all on hits. He walked none and fanned two in his 5.0 innings to improve to 3-5 this season.
  • Travis Rowland took over in the sixth and proceeded to throw 2.0 shutout frames with two walks and two strikeouts.
  • Charlie Jerger contributed an inning of work in which he allowed one hit and struck out one.
  • Cameron Ross tossed the ninth and allowed two hits.
  • NKU faced eight different OSU pitchers with starter Jake Vance (0-2) absorbing the loss.
Key Moments
  • NKU led, 5-1, through three innings and never trailed. The Norse scored a pair in the opening frame on an RBI double from Ganns and an RBI single from Mercurio.
  • The duo drove in one run apiece in the third inning as well, both launching solo homers followed by an RBI double from Brendan Alas for the 5-1 edge.
  • OSU's only run of the game was scored on a ground out in the second.
  • NKU pitchers held the Buckeyes scoreless for the final seven frames.
  • Richmond stretched NKU's lead to 6-1, scoring on a TJ Alas double after reaching on a single to lead off the sixth.
  • Ganns drove in his third and fourth runs of the game on a two-run double in the eighth, scoring Richmond and Haueter for the 8-1 result.

  • NKU batted .471 (8-for-17) with two outs on Wednesday.
  • Ganns clubbed his team-leading ninth home run. The junior has 16 RBI and four home runs in the last six games.
  • TJ Alas has now reached base in 26-straight games.
  • In his last five appearances, Rowland has totaled 9.0 innings pitched without allowing an earned run. Opponents have posted just three hits against him in that span.
