@NKUNorseBSB splits doubleheader with League-leading UIC

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team dropped game one of a doubleheader against League-leading UIC on Sunday, 5-3, before coming back to take game two, 6-2, at Bill Aker Baseball Complex. The Norse, who are now 15-24 overall and 8-8 in the Horizon League, snapped UIC's nine-game win streak.

UIC now sits at 28-9 overall and 16-3 in League play.

Trey Ganns and Conor Ledger each had four hits on the day while Dominic Mercurio and Mike Moffatt led with three RBI apiece. Six Norse pitchers made appearances on Sunday, holding UIC to seven total runs in 18.0 innings.
 
GAME ONE | UIC 5, Northern Kentucky 3

The Norse led through six innings of game one after starter Trey Ganns allowed just four hits and two runs across 7.0 innings pitched. A three-run eighth inning handed UIC its victory.

At the Plate
  • Ledger led NKU at the dish, going 3-for-4 in game one.
  • TJ Alas and Brad Bohlen also had multi-hit games as the Norse offense struck out just four times in game one.
  • Mercurio led with two RBI. Jake Richmond added an RBI on a home run.
On the Mound
  • Ganns struck out five and walked three as he twirled seven innings of two-run baseball. His 7.0 innings pitched is a season-high.
  • Cameron Ross absorbed the loss after throwing 2.0 innings with four hits and three runs. Ross is now 2-2 on the year.
Key Moments
  • Ganns retired the first nine batters he faced and set the Flames down in order in four of his first five innings.
  • Meanwhile, Richmond sent the fifth UIC pitch of the game over the centerfield wall for a 1-0 lead, which stuck through three full innings.
  • UIC scored on an RBI single to tie the game, 1-1, in the top of the fourth.
  • Mercurio restored NKU's advantage with a sacrifice fly to push Alas across in the sixth for a 2-1 edge.
  • UIC quickly tied it up in the next half inning then scored three runs on three hits in the eighth for a 5-2 lead.
  • The Norse could only push one more run across the plate, coming on a Mercurio single.
GAME TWO | Northern Kentucky 6, UIC 2

NKU's pitching continued to shine in game two, highlighted by Jordan Menfee's 4.1 relief innings with five hits and one run. NKU trailed by one early, but came back in the second and never trailed throughout the remainder of the game.

At the Plate
  • Trey Ganns and Will Haueter went 3-for-4. Haueter added one RBI and one run scored while Ganns had three runs scored.
  • Mike Moffatt had a game-high three RBI, two of which came on a home run in the sixth inning.
  • Chad Roberts added a 2-for-4 showing from the plate.
  • NKU and UIC posted 13 hits apiece. The Flames' hits were all singles as they stranded 17 runners on base.
On the Mound
  • Starter Pat Kelley threw 1.0 inning and pitched into the second inning, allowing five hits and one run.
  • Jordan Menfee took over for the next 4.1 innings where he allowed just one run, fanned three and walked four.
  • Travis Rowland, Seth Rosenberg and Cameron Ross closed the game with a combined 3.2 scoreless innings with three hits.
Key Moments
  • Three-straight singles helped the Flames go ahead, 1-0, in the top of the first.
  • The Norse scored two runs on three hits in the second inning, scoring on a Moffatt groundout and Roberts RBI single for a 2-1 lead.
  • A groundout RBI from UIC knotted the game at 2-2 in the fourth but the Norse bullpen held UIC scoreless throughout the remainder of the game.
  • Moffatt's two-run bomb put NKU in the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. NKU added two more insurance runs on four hits in the eighth.
Norse Notes
  • The Norse have posted five-straight games without an error.
  • Ganns hit .524 across five games this week. Ten of his 11 total hits were for extra-bases including seven doubles and three home runs for a 1.286 slugging percentage. The junior added nine RBI and a .545 on-base percentage. On the mound, he also totaled 12.0 innings of work with just seven hits and three runs.
  • TJ Alas has now reached base in 30-straight games.
  • Menfee has allowed four earned runs in his last 16.0 innings pitched, spanning five outings. Similarly, Rowland three earned runs in his last 11.2 innings, spanning seven outings.
