HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky's women's tennis is back in action after not playing in a fortnight and will open up the home campaign with Belmont on Friday, Feb. 16. First serve against the Bruins is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Five Seasons Sports Club in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
The Norse are still looking for their first win, sitting at 0-3 after taking on staunch competition in No. 21 Kentucky and Louisville before falling in a heartbreaker to Arkansas State, 4-3. The Norse delivered a strong 1-2 punch in the top singles flights against the Red Wolves with
Margita Sunjic and
Maria Koo taking down their opponents in straight sets, and
Sydney Power put the Norse in position to take the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 4 singles spot. The match came down to the No. 3 singles contest, which saw
Taylor Culbertson fall in two hotly-contested sets.
Belmont has had considerable experience on the court this season with seven matches under its belt, but the Bruins hold a 1-6 record in that stretch with the only victory being a 4-3 win over North Alabama on Feb. 2. Maria Plaksina headlines the Bruins' lineup, but has fallen in all of her singles matches this season. Belmont has received many of its points from Drew Hawkins in the No. 2 spot, as she holds a 4-3 record this season, including a three-set win when she was moved up to the No. 1 spot against North Alabama.
