Karl Harris came off the bench to score 22 points in leading Northern Kentucky to a 69-68 win at Coastal Carolina on Tuesday night. The win moves NKU's record to 2-1 on the year, while CCU drops to 1-2.
Stats Leaders
- Harris was electric early and often, scoring his 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor and 5-of-7 from 3-point range. He also made 3-of-4 at the charity stripe and contributed seven rebounds.
- Jalen Tate did a little bit of everything for the Norse, scoring 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and game-high seven assists.
- Trevon Faulkner made 4-of-6 field-goal attempts and finished with 13 points. He also had five assists, three rebounds and three steals.
Turning Point
- The Norse led by a point, 67-66, when Harris nabbed an offensive rebound. He was fouled and made both free throws. NKU then got a defensive stop, but Dantez Walton missed the front end of the 1-and-1 with 10 seconds remaining. Walton was then called for a foul, but Coastal Carolina's Garrick Green missed the first of three free throws and banked in the last, despite trying to miss intentionally.
First Half Summary
- Faulkner was active early in the game, scoring 11 points in the first 12 minutes of the game. He also added two rebounds, three assists and three steals in the stanza.
- Karl Harris scored four points early, but was instrumental in NKU's 11-0 run to end the frame. He scored the first nine points, all from long range, then stole a Chanticleer's pass that led to Tate's lay-in at the other end.
- Tate had seven points, but also impacted the game with six boards, three assists and two steals.
- NKU shot 40 percent (12-of-30) from the floor and made 35 percent (6-of-17) from three. CCU made just 30 percent (9-of-30) and only 20 percent (2-of-10) from 3-point territory.
- Northern Kentucky's defense hounded Coastal Carolina into 10 miscues, which it turned into a 13-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
- The Norse also raced out in transition and benefited by outscoring the Chanticleers 11-0 in the open court.
Second Half Summary
- Coastal Carolina scored the first eight points to force Northern Kentucky to call a timeout with the teams tied at 34. The Chanticleers extended the run to 11-straight before the Norse answered with a 6-0 run of their own.
- NKU later used an 8-2 spurt to push ahead by nine, 59-50.
- CCU made a late push before the eventful final 30 seconds sealed Northern Kentucky's win.
- Both teams converted a high rate in the second half, with NKU making 54 percent (13-of-24) from the field and 44 percent (4-of-9) from three. Coastal made 50 percent (12-of-24) field-goal attempts, including 3-of-7 from long range.
- Coastal Carolina made up the second-half difference at the free-throw line, as NKU was whistled for 16 fouls leading a 22 Chanticleer free-throw attempts. They made 16. Northern Kentucky attempted just seven free throws, of which it made five, off of eight Coastal Carolina fouls.
Game Notes
- Harris was one point of his career high. He scored 23 on Feb. 1, 2018, against Idaho State.
- Tate now has 19 assists through three games and has a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio.
- The Norse had 16 assists on 25 made buckets.
- NKU finished the game shooting 46 percent from the floor and 39 percent from three, while CCU made 39 percent of its field goals and 29 percent of its long range attempts.
