HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University men's basketball team, which earned a share of the Horizon League Regular-Season Championship by virtue of its win at Green Bay Saturday afternoon, will be the No. 2 seed in the eight-team league tournament and host No. 7 Detroit Mercy at BB&T Arena on Wednesday, March 6. NKU finished the regular season 23-8 overall and 13-5 in Horizon League action, tying Wright State atop the standings. Wright State is the overall No. 1 seed by virtue of its 2-0 mark against third-place Oakland, which went 11-7 in league play.
A three-way tie for sixth-place between YSU, Detroit Mercy and IUPUI was broken through head-to-head results, with Youngstown State being slotted as the sixth seed, Detroit Mercy seventh and IUPUI eighth.
NKU went 2-0 against Detroit Mercy this year, winning 95-73 in the Motor City before claiming a 97-65 decision in Highland Heights.
Winners of the quarterfinal matchups at the campus sites will head to Detroit and Little Caesars Arena for the semifinals and finals set to be held March 11-12.
Northern Kentucky has won a league championship in each of the last three seasons, taking home the tournament title in 2017 before winning the regular-season outright in 2017-18 and sharing the regular-season crown this season.
