Men's Tri finishes Fall competition at MECTC Conference Championships

MONTICELLO, Ind. -- The Norse men's triathlon program competed in its first conference championships in program history today at the MidEast Collegiate Triathlon Conference (MECTC) Championships at the Boilerman Triathlon at Lake Freeman in Monticello, Indiana.  The Olympic distance race consisted of an 1500m lake swim, 40km bike, and 10km run. Competing for the Norse was Senior Will Griffith who finished in 62nd place, and with this finish, he completed in his first Olympic distance triathlon. This result qualifies the Norse men's triathlon team for the USAT Collegiate Club National Championships that will take place March 28th-March 29th, 2025 in Miami, Florida.

Head Coach Brooks Doughtie stated, "This was truly a great moment for Will to show up and compete strong throughout the day to complete his first Olympic distance triathlon. Going from the sprint distance at a previous race to double the distance to Olympic can be a big obstacle, and Will just stayed steady throughout the whole day while performing stronger today than at the sprint distance. To have the Norse represented at the MECTC championships is just the start of what we are looking to grow and build as a program, so today was just the start of putting Norse Tri on the map!"

THE BASICS
Will Griffith: 62nd place
RACE: MECTC Conference Championships
LOCATION: Lake Freeman, Indiana

HOW IT HAPPENED
Will Griffith represented the Norse among over 200 triathletes racing the Boilerman Triathlon competing at the MECTC Championships. Griffith had a strong swim coming out of the water with the first chase group with a swim time of 23:04 over the 1500m. Completing the 40km bike leg which consisted of a few hills with a ton of wind allowed him to finish the bike in 1:27:28. The 10km run consisted of 2 very hilly run loops, completing it in 51:32. This allowed him to have an overall time of 2:44:29 and a 62nd place finish.

NEXT UP
With today's conclusion of the MECTC Championships, the Fall portion of the men's season is complete. The next events are still to be determined but look for the team to compete at a few indoor triathlon events over the winter months to prepare for the USAT National Championships in late March.
