HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team returns to the NKU Soccer Stadium for its home finale on Saturday evening as the Norse welcome Kennesaw State in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Senior Night.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. after a pregame ceremony to honor the team's two seniors,
CG Bryant and
Abbey Scherer, as they prepare to take the field for the last regular-season home game of their careers. The Norse enter the weekend's lone contest at 5-7-3 overall and 1-3-1 in the Atlantic Sun after falling to Louisville, 1-0, on Wednesday night. Kari Weinland's 17th-minute goal off a corner kick from Erin Yenney gave the Cardinals the victory.
Macy Hamblin took three of NKU's four shots on the night, placing two on target, while
Brooke Schocker recorded nine saves in goal for the Norse.
ABOUT KENNESAW STATE: The Owls are 5-9-1 on the year and hold a 2-3-0 mark in the Atlantic Sun. Last weekend, Kennesaw State split a pair of conference game in Jacksonville, Florida. Brittany Reed netted Friday's only goal as the Owls defeated Jacksonville, 1-0. On Sunday, North Florida's 80th-minute game-winner was the only goal the Ospreys needed for a 1-0 victory over the Owls.
Maggie Gaughn tops the Kennesaw State offensive effort with five goals, followed by Marit Sandtroeen, who holds seven points on three goals and one assist. Reed had added two goals and two assists for the Owls, and Mali Kokvoll and Alma Gardarsdottir have each recorded two assists as well.
Olivia Sturdivant and Mady Carter have shared time in goal this season. Sturdivant has earned 10 starts and holds a 1.59 goals against average. She recorded the team's only shutout this season and has collected 37 saves en route to a 3-6 record. Carter has started five of the six games she has appeared in, and she is 2-3-1 on the year with 15 saves and 1.91 GAA.
LAST TIME AGAINST KENNESAW STATE: Katrina Frost scored a goal in each half to give Kennesaw State a 2-0 victory over NKU on Sept. 29, 2013, in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Frost came in the game as a substitute in the 23rd minute and made her mark on the scoresheet just 12 minutes later, picking up a through ball from Suzanne Arafa to finish on a breakaway for her first goal of the season.
Frost's second goal came in the 68th minute when the Kennesaw State midfielder took the ball away from the Norse backline and chipped the ball past NKU goalkeeper
Tanner Ruberg, who made seven stops on the day, for the insurance marker.
With the win, Kennesaw State improved to 2-0 in the all-time series with the Norse.
SENIOR FAREWELL: Prior to Saturday's contest, NKU will honor
CG Bryant and
Abbey Scherer for their contributions to the program as part of Senior Night festivities. Bryant and Scherer have had a hand in 50 Norse victories heading into the Kennesaw State matchup, and they have been important leaders as the Norse transition to NCAA Division I status, helping NKU earn the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic award each year and Team Ethic award the past three.
Bryant, an exercise science major and forward from Milford, Ohio, has recorded 23 points over her NKU career on 10 goals and three assists in 57 games. Her first career goal came in just her second collegiate game, scoring the game-winner against Bellarmine on Sept. 10, 2010. Last season, she returned from a redshirt year and netted a goal against USC Upstate as the Norse finished the season with two straight victories.
Scherer, a nursing major and defender from Cincinnati, Ohio, has seen action in 67 games during her four-year career with NKU. She has accumulated eight assists and one goal for a total of eight points, and she has been an important part of the Norse backfield that has posted 17 shutouts. Her first career goal came last season against Stetson as NKU defeated the Hatters, 2-1, at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
SATURDAY PROMOTIONS: In addition to the pregame Senior Night activities, it will also be Local County Night where fans will receive $3 admission with proof of residency in Boone, Campbell or Kenton County. Kids 12 and under can get in free as part of Junior Norse and Camper Reunion Day.
IMPORTANT PARKING INFORMATION: The Bank of Kentucky Center will host an event on Oct. 18 at 7:30 pm. With this event conflicting with the NKU women's soccer game going on at the same time, there are some parking changes and recommendations for getting to the NKU Soccer Complex:
--Fans are encouraged to arrive early between 6-6:30 p.m. in order to avoid the traffic congestion that will increase as the 7:30 p.m. event approaches at The Bank of Kentucky Center.
--Parking for soccer will be located in two areas on campus. Soccer spectators will be able to park in the Welcome Center Garage on campus for $10 per vehicle. There will also be a $4 per vehicle fee in Lot T, which is a bit further away from the NKU Soccer Complex. Spectators can choose either lot for the soccer match that evening.
