NKU women's basketball faces No. 13 Kentucky Wednesday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's basketball team continues its five-game road trip on Wednesday as the Norse stay in the Bluegrass State, traveling south to Lexington, Kentucky, to face No. 13 Kentucky in nonconference action.

Tipoff from Memorial Coliseum is set for 7 p.m.  Links to live stats, live audio and the SEC Network broadcast are available at NKUNorse.com.  Follow @NKUNorseGameDay on Twitter for in-game updates for the NKU women's basketball team this season as well.

NKU brings a 4-3 overall record to the first matchup between the two teams since the 1990-91 season.  The Norse traveled to Annapolis, Maryland, over the weekend and picked up wins against Grand Canyon and UNC Greensboro at the Navy Classic, hosted by the Naval Academy.  Melody Doss led the NKU offense over the two games, averaging 17.0 points per game on the season after scoring 15 against Grand Canyon and 16 against UNC Greensboro.  Kaitlyn Gerrety picked up the team's first double-double of the season with an 11-point, 10-rebound effort against the Spartans on Saturday.

ABOUT KENTUCKY: The Wildcats are 6-1 on the year after winning two of three contests at the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam over the Thanksgiving break.  Illinois handed Kentucky its only loss of the year with a 77-71 victory on Thursday, before the Wildcats rebounded with a 92-88 overtime win against Oklahoma the next day.  Kentucky then defeated South Florida, 61-57, to close out the event.

The Wildcats, who are the first nationally ranked Division I opponent for the Norse, feature three double-digit scorers, led by Jennifer O'Neill's 17.3 points per game.  Makayla Epps follows with a 15.7 average, and she also leads the team with 21 assists.  Linnae Harper is scoring 11.3 points per contest, while Azia Bishop is pulling down a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game.  Bishop also leads the team with 13 blocks on the year.

Head coach Matthew Mitchell is in his eighth season with Kentucky, and he entered the 2014-15 season with a 170-71 record with the Wildcats.  Prior to taking the helm at Kentucky, Mitchell spent two seasons at Morehead State.  In nine years of coaching, he amassed a 200-100 (.667) career record.

NKU-UK SERIES: Kentucky, the only member of the Southeastern Conference that the Norse have ever faced, holds a 10-4 advantage in the all-time series with NKU.  The two teams, however, have not met since the 1990-91 season.  The Wildcats took a 68-58 victory in the first-ever meeting against the Norse on Jan. 14, 1975, in Lexington, Kentucky.  NKU earned its first win of the series a year later in Regents Hall, defeating Kentucky, 56-55, on Dec. 16, 1975.

The Wildcats have won eight of the previous 10 matchups.  The last game between the two teams came on Nov. 26, 1990, where Kentucky topped the Norse, 97-79, in Lexington.  NKU's last win over Kentucky was a 71-69 victory in the KWIC postseason tournament on March 3, 1979.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: As NKU enters its third consecutive road game, the Norse boast a 4-1 on the road this season, including three neutral site contests.  NKU began the season with a 76-55 victory over Delaware State on Nov. 14, the first day of the Akron Classic, before dropping its only road decision to Akron, 82-49, the next day.

The Norse then traveled to Normal, Illinois, where Melody Doss scored a season- and game-high 21 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead the team to a 59-48 victory over Illinois State.  Over the weekend, NKU earned two neutral-site wins in Annapolis, Maryland, with a 52-45 win over Grand Canyon on Friday at the Navy Classic and a 66-58 victory against UNC Greensboro on Saturday.

KEEPING IT BELOW 60: NKU is 4-1 this season when holding opponents to 60 points or less.  A year ago, the Norse were 8-3 when allowing less than 60 points.  NKU limited Delaware State to just 55 points in its season opener before only surrendering 48 to Illinois State on Nov. 19.  The Norse only gave up 45 points to Loyola (Chicago) at The Bank of Kentucky Center three days later but shot just 18.3 percent from the floor to drop a 45-38 decision to the Ramblers.

NKU held both Grand Canyon and UNC Greensboro under 60 points over the weekend as well.  The Norse defense limited the Antelopes to 25.0 percent (6-for-24) shooting in the second half on Friday to claim their first come-from-behind victory of the season, a 52-45 win over Grand Canyon.  On Saturday, NKU held off a late UNC Greensboro rally for a 66-58 victory.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE SUCCESS: Kaitlyn Gerrety recorded NKU's first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Norse defeated UNC Greensboro, 66-58, on Saturday evening.  She finished 4-for-6 from the field, and she recorded four assists, two blocked shots and four steals as well.

The senior center from Cincinnati, Ohio, is averaging 6.4 points per game and leads the team with a 6.1 rebounding average.  Gerrety has grabbed a team-high 43 total boards, including 10 on the offensive end of the court, and she has rejected a team-leading 11 shots.  She is blocking 1.6 shot attempts per game this season and ranks third among Atlantic Sun Conference players.

STRONG SHOWING: A pair of NKU freshmen had strong showings against Grand Canyon on Friday at the Navy Classic.  Molly Franson and Mikayla Terry came off the bench to combine for 18 points and 12 rebounds to help lead the Norse to the 52-45 victory. Franson scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds against the Antelopes, and she finished 8-for-10 from the free-throw line.  Terry added eight points on 3-for-4 shooting from the floor and grabbed six rebounds for NKU.

Franson, a forward/center from Tinley Park, Illinois, is averaging 4.1 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.  She has blocked five shots and collected two steals for the Norse.  Terry, a forward from Lansing, Michigan, adds 4.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest.  She is shooting a team-best 44.4 percent from the field, and her 12 offensive rebounds are tied for the team lead.
