Men's tennis set for big trip to Big Apple

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University men's tennis team sets its eyes on the Big Apple for a three-match road trip to close out spring break.

The Norse will take on Hartford on Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. before facing off against Wagner on Saturday at 11 a.m. The team closes out the weekend against St. Francis on Sunday. The Norse and Terriers will get started at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, site of the US Open, at 3 p.m.

NKU (1-5) is back in action after a weekend off to recharge at the start of the school break. The Norse last saw action on Feb. 28 in a 6-1 loss to Samford in Richmond, Kentucky. Adrian Isache picked up NKU's point with a win at the No. 5 singles flight to improve his individual record to 3-6 on the season.

Isache leads the way in doubles play for the Norse, teaming with Jack Carney to post a 3-4 mark in the No. 2 flight. Christopher Angulo and Mate Virag, playing in the top doubles flight, have won each of their last two completed matches, besting teams from Thomas More and Samford.

A WORD ABOUT HARTFORD: The Hawks enter the weekend with a 5-5 record after a 7-0 loss to Colgate last weekend. Ryan Lugtu stands as the Hawks' top singles player, still looking for his first win of the spring, while Will Drumwright and Nicholas Sharwarko combine on the Hawks' top doubles pair, having posted a 6-2 win against Sacred Heart earlier this spring.

A WORD ABOUT WAGNER: The Seahawks are 7-4 on the season but have been on a slide, dropping each of their four matches this spring so far. Michal Rolski has won each of his last six matches in the top singles spot to climb to a 9-3 singles mark, while Charlton Boyd's 11 singles wins, primarily at No. 2 and No. 3, lead the team. Boyd and Sam Flaxman have teamed to go 7-5 in doubles action.

A WORD ABOUT ST. FRANCIS: The Terriers are seeking their first win of the season, standing at 0-11 on the year, but with four of those losses coming by 4-3 scores. France Terns-Campius stands as the team's top singles player with three wins, while Victor Blasco has added four singles victories.

UP NEXT: The Norse return home on Friday, March 20 to open Atlantic Sun Conference play against North Florida. First serve from the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex is set for 11 a.m.
