Women's tennis travels to New York for weekend set

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's tennis team will head to New York City area this weekend for a three-match series to close out Spring Break.

The Norse will open the weekend on Friday at 1:30 p.m., taking on Hartford. On Saturday, the Norse face Rider in a noon start before closing out the weekend on Sunday against St. Francis (N.Y.).

NKU is 2-6 on the year after taking a 4-3 win against Chicago State during a three-day trip to the Windy City two weeks ago. After the teams split singles play, the match came down to a 7-5 win by Hailey Shanahan and Danielle Donahue in the top doubles flight to seal the match for the Norse.

Donahue stands a 4-6 in singles play this year to lead the Norse, and laid claim to the team's first ever Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honor on Feb. 18 after a come-from-behind win against IPFW's Ella Norgren. Rheanna Morehart and Sydney Power each have three singles wins on the year as well.

The Donahue/Shanahan doubles team stands 4-4 on the season, including a 2-3 mark during the spring. Power and Nicole Soutar have teamed up to post a 3-2 mark this season.

A WORD ABOUT HARTFORD: The Hawks stand at 5-7 on the year after dropping a 7-0 decision to Yale on Wednesday. Katherine Long plays in the top singles flight for Hartford, having claimed her first win of the spring in a third-set comeback against Colgate's Jennifer Ho, while Skyler Schaar has been strong in the middle of the singles lineup.

A WORD ABOUT RIDER: The Broncs are 1-8 on the year, with the Norse opening the spring half of their schedule. Rider's lone win came against St. Francis on Oct. 25, 7-0. Allison Noll has been strong in Rider's top-flight, going 7-2 in singles play while teaming with Michelle Carvaglio to post a 5-2 doubles mark.

A WORD ABOUT ST. FRANCIS: The Terriers are still looking for their first win of the season, standing 0-8 on the year without a point on the season. St. Francis looks to the leadership of seniors Jovana Bojinovic and Natasha Edwards.

UP NEXT: The Norse will open the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex for the spring season on Thursday, March 19, welcoming Wisconsin-Green Bay to Highland Heights for a 2 p.m. start. NKU opens A-Sun play the following day, hosting North Florida. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
