HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's tennis team will take on a pair of local rivals in midweek action, as the Norse will travel across the Ohio River to take on Cincinnati on Tuesday before returning home on Wednesday to host Xavier.
Tuesday's match at Cincinnati will take place at 3 p.m., while Wednesday's home affair against Xavier will begin at 1 p.m. at the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex.
NKU enters the weekend with a record of 6-11 after splitting Atlantic Sun Conference action over the weekend. NKU earned a 4-2 victory over Kennesaw State on Thursday before dropping a hard-fought 4-3 match to South Carolina Upstate. Five different players picked up singles wins over the two match dates for the Norse, with
Danielle Donahue,
Rheanna Morehart and
Sydney Power sharing the team lead with seven wins each on the season.
A WORD ABOUT CINCINNATI: The Bearcats are 6-9 on the season and losers of their last two after dropping a 4-3 result to Dayton and a 7-0 decision at Xavier. Kelly Poggensee-Wei leads the way in the No. 1 singles flight at 11-3 on the season, while Lauren Bellinger and 9-6 and Ali Miller at 8-4 hold down the middle of the lineup. Bellinger and Poggensee-Wei lead doubles play at 9-5 on the year.
A WORD ABOUT XAVIER: The Musketeers are 12-4 and in the midst of a six-match winning streak, including wins over Seton Hall, Providence and Cincinnati over the last week. Xavier boasts four players with 20 or more singles victories, led by Cristina Di Lorenzo at 25-6 on the year playing at No. 3. Sydney Liggins (24-8) and Alex Brinker (20-14) have been splitting time between No. 1 and No. 2, and Andrea Wolf, at 21-11, has been solid at No. 5. Xavier also has two 20-win doubles teams in the pairs of Di Lorenzo and Daniella Patton (20-7) and Wolf and Allyson Westling (20-7).
