HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University student-athletes are once again being honored for their performance in the classroom as 163 Norse received 2014-15 Atlantic Sun Conference All-Academic honors for achieving a 3.0 grade point average or higher during the academic year, the league office announced on Thursday.
The NKU total recorded by the Atlantic Sun represented 69.58 percent of all student-athletes, which is the highest posted by the Norse since becoming a member of the conference prior to the 2012-13 school year.
Six NKU student-athletes boasted a perfect 4.0 GPA: Rachel Conaway (women's soccer),
Allie Conner (softball),
McKenzie Eskridge (volleyball),
Clare Field (women's track & field),
Michael Schmidt (men's golf) and
Mate Virag (men's tennis), two of which were also named to the Presidential Scholar list. Field and Schmidt were joined by
Kiersten Ham (volleyball) and
Frannie Schultz (track & field) on the Presidential Scholar list, which is awarded to those who earned a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or above, have completed their final year of eligibility and received their bachelor's degree this year.
The Commissioner's Scholar List included 10 Norse:
Alex Caudill (softball),
Allie Conner (softball),
Malika Glover (women's basketball),
Ryan Hinz (baseball),
Zac Holtkamp (men's cross country/track & field),
Lindsay Mumley (women's cross country/track & field),
Josh Myers (baseball),
Abbey Scherer (women's soccer),
Nathan Sexton (men's soccer) and
Megan Wanstrath (volleyball). This honor is given to student-athletes with GPAs landing between 3.6 and 3.79 upon graduation, along with meeting the same requirements as Presidential Scholars recipients.
Spring 2015 marked the eighth-straight semester that NKU student-athletes surpassed the 3.0 GPA mark as a whole. The Norse followed a program-record fall GPA of 3.22 with a 3.20 this spring. Fourteen of NKU's 17 programs posted GPAs above 3.00, led by volleyball's highest team GPA of 3.668. Men's tennis (3.660) and women's cross country (3.56) provided NKU with three programs exceeding the 3.5 team GPA plateau.
For the spring semester, 22 Norse boasted perfect 4.0 GPAs, earning recognition on the NKU's President's Honor List. Nearly one-in-three student-athletes attained GPAs above 3.6 as an additional 54 student-athletes recorded marks between 3.6 and 3.99.
