WSOC hosts UIC in Horizon League home opener, travels to RMU

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team is set for its second Horizon League match of the season, and first at home, when it plays host to UIC on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at NKU Soccer Stadium.

The squad will then travel to take on Robert Morris on Monday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. to kick off a three-game road swing.

LAST TIME OUT: The Norse last competed when they fell to Toledo, 2-0, at home on Sept. 20. Despite the loss, redshirt junior goalkeeper Brooke Schocker recorded a season-high nine saves in her 90 minutes between the posts.

ABOUT UIC: Saturday's match will be the first Horizon League match-up of the season for the Flames (2-6-1) after their match against Cleveland State was postponed. UIC last saw action on Sept. 16 when they fell to Eastern Washington, 1-0. Sophomore forward Olivia Everin has netted two of UIC's six total goals this season and has a team-best four points. In goal, Kelly Fritz has logged 813:11 minutes and enters the match sporting a 2.10 goals against average and .729 save percentage.

ABOUT ROBERT MORRIS: The Colonials are currently 3-6 overall and will take on IPFW on Saturday before hosting NKU on Monday. RMU is led by redshirt senior forward Cassie Raymond who has totaled seven points (three goals, one assist) across six starts. The Colonials' primary goalkeeper is Chelsea De Jager who has played 540:00 minutes and has a team-high 37 saves with a 2.00 goals against average.

NORSE NOTES:

NKU holds a 2-2 record against first-time opponents this season. The Norse defeated first-time opponents The Citadel and Charleston Southern and fell to Illinois and Toledo for its 2-2 mark against new foes. The Flames are one of six Horizon League teams the NKU women's soccer will take on for the first time ever. Cleveland State, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Valparaiso and Wright State also await their first match-up with the Norse.

Sophomore Jessica Frey, NKU's goal leader, has been the first to score in three of the Norse's seven matches so far. Frey has found the back of the net within the first 15 minutes of action on three occasions this season, including twice in the third minute. Frey scored in the third minute against both IPFW (Aug. 21) and Youngstown State (Sept. 18). Her goal against Eastern Illinois on Aug. 23 came in the 13th minute.

Junior midfielder Sami Rutowski issued a strong performance in last season's game against Robert Morris. Rutowski assisted NKU's first goal and went on to net the Golden Goal in overtime to lead the Norse to a 2-1 victory on Sept. 14 of last year. In NKU's only other meeting with RMU, NKU fell 1-0 in the 2013 season opener on the road.

Schocker, a redshirt junior goalkeeper, has totaled 17 saves in the last three games. The Schaumburg, Ill. native, has 25 saves on the season after a season-high nine stops in NKU's last match against Toledo. Schocker holds the Horizon League's best goals against average at 0.62 and has allowed four goals in 580:26 minutes.

With Morgan Shafer netting a goal against Youngstown State last weekend, 10 different Norse have now scored a goal this season. The squad's team effort has led them to out-score opponents 17-5. Seventeen Norse have at least one point on the season, led by sophomore Macy Hamblin with 10 and sophomore Jessica Frey with nine.

NKU has earned a League-high five wins including one conference win to sit atop the Horizon League standings. The Norse are in the top three in six offensive categories including shots (127), points (55), goals (17), goals per game (2.43), assists (21) and assists per game (21). The defense has a League-best five goals allowed and 0.71 goals against average.

The Norse earned their 10th –straight NSCAA Team Academic Award on Wednesday. NKU was recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for the 13thtime since 2000 after posting a 3.42 grade point average during the 2014-15 academic year. The Team Academic Award is presented to collegiate teams with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.Overall, 859 college soccer programs won the award, including 554 women's teams.

UP NEXT: NKU will travel to take on Detroit on Saturday, Oct. 3 in a match set to air on ESPN3. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
