LAST TIME OUT: Northern Kentucky battled Detroit Mercy to a 1-1 draw at NKU Soccer Stadium over the weekend. With the result, NKU earned one point toward the Horizon League standings and clinched a conference tournament berth. Freshman
Shawna Zaken scored NKU's lone goal on an assist from
Macy Hamblin. Sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Lohmann picked up six saves.
SCOUTING WRIGHT STATE: Wright State and NKU are the only League teams with a pair of HL matches remaining in the regular season. Despite being a match behind due to the postponement last week, WSU is fourth in the League with a 4-2-1 record and 13 points, trailing NKU, which sits in third with a 5-1-1 record and 16 points.
The Raiders have struggled to score in their last two matches, falling to Milwaukee, 2-0, and UIC, 1-0. The squad ranks sixth in the League in both goals scored and goals allowed. WSU averages 1.19 goals per game with 21 goals across 17 contests. Meanwhile, the defense has allowed 1.28 goals per game.
WSU has spread its offense around, as Aaliyah Patten and Sarah Colvin are tied with a team-high 10 points on three goals and four assists. Mattie Cutts is the leading goal scorer with four goals and eight points. Four other Raiders have at least four points this season. Defensively, Katie Ruff is second in the HL in saves with 78, averaging 5.2 per game. Ruff owns a .796 save percentage and 1.33 goals-against average after appearing in 15 of WSU's 16 matches.
SERIES HISTORY: Wednesday will be the second-ever meeting between the two teams despite being separated by just 70 miles. Last year, the teams met for the first time on Oct. 14 when NKU defeated the Raiders 3-0 at NKU Soccer Stadium.
Macy Hamblin and
Jessica Frey each posted a goal and an assist in the match while current sophomore
Payton Naylor scored her first collegiate goal off the bench.
CLINCHED: Northern Kentucky clinched its third-consecutive berth to a conference tournament in its 1-1 draw against Detroit Mercy over the weekend. The Norse have secured the No. 4 seed or higher. If Northern Kentucky wins its final two matches of the season against Wright State and Valparaiso, and League-leading Milwaukee falls to Cleveland State in the Panthers' season finale on Friday, Oct. 28, NKU will clinch the regular-season title and hosting rights for the tournament. Milwaukee currently sits atop the table with a 7-1-0 League record and 21 points followed by Detroit Mercy (17 points), Northern Kentucky (16 points), Wright State (13 points), Valparaiso (12 points) and Oakland (12 points).
BRIGHT FUTURE: A trio of Norse freshmen has made an immediate impact this season. Freshman
Shawna Zaken has scored two goals in as many matches. Zaken owns a team-best shot on goal percentage with an .800 clip as eight of her 10 attempts have been on target. She has one assist and also boasts a .200 shot percentage after scoring two goals on her 10 attempts this season.
Fellow freshman
Ally Perkins has eight points and is tied for third in the Horizon League in assists with six, and is fourth in the League in assists per game with 0.43. Perkins has scored one goal, a game-winner against Toledo. Meanwhile, freshman defender
Hannah Fischer is one of four Norse to start all 15 contests, racking up 1,175 minutes out of a possible 1,382.
AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS: The Norse rank second, behind Milwaukee, in every offensive category in the Horizon League including shots (209), shots per game (4.73), goals (23), goals per game (1.53), assists (25) and assists per game (1.67). Junior forward
Macy Hamblin leads the Horizon League in both points per game (1.5) and goals per game (0.5), after racking up 18 points and six goals across 12 games this season. She is also the League leader in shots with 52, averaging 4.33 per game.
Jessica Frey joins Hamblin in the Horizon League's top-five in shots (43), shots per game (3.07), goals (six), goals per game (0.43), and game-winning goals (three). Defensively,
Emily Lohmann is in a tie for first in shutouts per game with 0.31. Her goals-against average of 0.93 is good for second in the Horizon League while her .800 save percentage ranks third.
UP NEXT: Northern Kentucky hosts Valparaiso in the regular-season finale on Friday, Oct. 28 at NKU Soccer Stadium. NKU's eight seniors will be honored prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff as part of Senior Night. The match will air on ESPN3.
