HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky women's basketball welcomes former Atlantic Sun foe Stetson into BB&T Arena this Wednesday, hosting the Hatters for a matinee contest at 11:30 a.m. ET. Wednesday's game will be Victor's Hoops 4 Health Day, which brings in students from numerous schools in the area for an afternoon of basketball and health awareness. The game will be carried out on ESPN3's platform with Andrew Kappes on play-by-play and Branson Cole on color for the Norse. Fans can stream the game live on computers, tablets and smart phones through WatchESPN or the ESPN App.
LAST TIME OUT: The Norse picked up a win over former A-Sun opponent ETSU on Saturday evening, downing the Buccaneers 62-56 in a contest that never saw NKU trail for the game's entirety. Junior guard
Mikayla Terry was the story of the night, posting a breakout performance with a career-high 23 points aided by a flawless 4-of-4 effort from 3-point range. Before Saturday, Terry had never scored 10 points in a game, let alone 20. Junior forward
Kasey Uetrecht was also impressive for the Norse with 15 points, which marked the first time that two Norse have scored more than 15 points in a game since March 12 when Uetrecht and
Rianna Gayheart scored 20 and 16, respectively, in the double-overtime Horizon League Tournament semifinals setback to Green Bay.
NKU VS. THE NATION: With the team easing into its new system under Coach Whitaker, the Norse have already shown strong numbers in a handful of national statistical categories. Most impressively, NKU has been showing disruptive defense at the 3-point line, holding teams to 24.7 percent from long range for the 28th-best 3-point field goal defense percentage among NCAA Division I teams. NKU also ranks in the top-50 in scoring defense, holding teams to just 55.6 points per game for the No. 41 scoring defense in the country. Additionally, the Norse are doing so while playing a clean game as the team ranks 31st in the country in fewest fouls per game at 15.0.
SCOUTING STETSON: The Hatters hold a 6-1 record heading into Wednesday's matchup, with the only loss of the season coming in a 79-62 setback to Arkansas. As a team, Stetson is posting 73.4 points per game and forcing more than 20 turnovers a game. In terms of national standings, the Hatters have been doing a great job of getting to the line and capitalizing on the opportunity, ranking ninth in Division I in free throws made and 17th in both free throw attempts and percentage.
Stetson has a trio of players averaging double figures, led by senior guard Brianti Saunders with 16.6 ppg. Breana Bey and Brittney Chambers add 14.4 and 12.6 ppg, respectively. The Hatters also see strong play out of 6-foot-3 Sarah Sagerer, who averages just under a double-double a game with 9.4 ppg and 9.3 rpg. The Austrian product is also a defensive threat, ranking seventh in the nation in blocks with 22 rejections on the season, good for 3.14 a game.
As a former member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, NKU has a history with the Hatters dating back to the 2012-13 season. Stetson holds a slight advantage in the all-time series, 4-3, but NKU has only lost to the Hatters once in Highland Heights. The last time the two teams met was on March 11, 2015, with NKU narrowly escaping with a 53-52 victory in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Championship.
