DAYTON, Ohio – Northern Kentucky's women's tennis handily defeated St. Francis (Pa.) in the season opener on Saturday evening, taking down the Red Flash 6-1. With the win, the Norse are now 1-0 on the 2017 championship season while SFU begins the year at 0-1.
Match Notables
- NKU gained an advantage due to St. Francis' short roster. Down one player, the Red Flash surrendered the No. 6 singles match to walkover, as well as the No. 3 doubles match.
- The Norse won the opening point after Klara Skopac and Danielle Donahue downed Laura Gutierrez and Lucia Seigford in No. 1 doubles, 6-4.
- Four Norse notched singles victories to seal the win. The first to finish was Sierra Nellessen in No. 5 singles, with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kathryn Dunleavy. Margita Sunjic clinched the victory with her win in the No. 1 slot with a matching straight-set win over Laura Gutierrez, 6-2, 6-2.
- In the remaining singles wins, Klara Skopac had a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lucia Seigford in No. 2 singles, while Katja Dijanezevic battled for a three-set win in No. 3 singles against Raksha Bode. Dijanezevic won the first set, 6-3, but fell in the second, 2-6. She then won the tiebreak game, 11-9.
- Two Norse freshmen made their debut for the 2017 championship season. Sunjic and Dijanezevic both notched singles wins, while Sunjic also won in No. 3 doubles with Nellessen by walkover.
- NKU will host Dayton on Jan. 28, with first serve scheduled for 4 p.m. at Five Seasons Sports Club.
