HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky women's basketball is set to begin the back half of the Horizon League slate, taking on Detroit Mercy for the second time this season on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff from BB&T Arena is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, with a live broadcast on ESPN3 with Rich Hidy and Karmen Graham on the call for the Norse. Fans can stream Friday's contest live on computers, tablets and smart phones via WatchESPN and the ESPN App.
Sunday will also mark NKU's celebration of Girls and Women in Sports Day. Following the contest, various athletes from NKU's women's athletic programs will hold free youth specialty clinics on the floor of BB&T Arena.
LAST TIME OUT: The Norse held with Oakland for the majority of the game on Friday night, but ran out of steam midway through the fourth quarter, which allowed the Golden Grizzlies to pull away for a 61-47 lead. NKU tied the contest up on multiple occasions, including a clutch 3-pointer at the buzzer from senior guard
Kelley Wiegman, but Oakland took over and ended the game on an 18-4 run. Senior forward
Rebecca Lyttle recorded her sixth double-double of the season, leading the team with 12 points and tying her season high of 13 rebounds. Junior guard
Mikayla Terry was just off her second career double-double, pouring in 11 points while grabbing nine boards.
SCOUTING DETROIT MERCY: Since the two teams last met on Jan. 16, the Titans have gone 2-1 in League play with the most recent game being a setback to Wright State, 77-69 on Friday evening. The Titans were tabbed to finish second in the League according to the preseason poll and currently sit at 10-10 overall and 6-3 in League play, currently tied for third in the League standings. Detroit Mercy still showcased its talent in its setbacks, as the Titans were the closest League team to taking down No. 24/25 Green Bay in a 60-55 loss on Jan. 11. As a team, the Titans' top statistic is in their 3-point shooting. Detroit Mercy not only leads the League in 3-pointers per game, but the team is also 21st in the nation with 8.3 triples a contest. The Titans are also aggressive on the defensive boards, ranking 13th nationally with 30 defensive rebounds a game.
Individually, Detroit Mercy boasts the Preseason Player of the Year, Rosanna Reynolds. The senior guard not only leads the team with 16.7 points per game, but she also leads the League and ranks 26th in the nation with 5.7 assists a game. Detroit Mercy's top threat from beyond the arc is Nicole Urbanick, who tops the League in 3-pointers attempted and made, with 2.63 a game, while also connecting at a .400 clip from long range for the third-best 3FG percentage.
NKU has only squared off with Detroit Mercy three times in program history, beginning last season when NKU joined the Horizon League. The Titans hold the slim advantage all-time, 2-1. When the two teams met less than two weeks ago, NKU was very much in the contest with several ties before a pair of integral back-to-back 3-pointers allowed the Titans to pull away for a 57-49 win in Detroit. The Norse were led by
Taryn Taugher with a new career best of 14 points, while
Rebecca Lyttle recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Also of note, the Norse were able to hold one of the best defensive rebounding teams in the nation to 19 defensive boards, out-rebounding the Titans 38-27 overall.
