HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky women's basketball takes on Oakland for the final road game of the 2016-17 regular season on Monday, Feb. 20. Taryn Taugher added 14, but the Norse were unable to control a high-scoring offensive effort from Cleveland State in a 77-58 setback on Saturday afternoon. The Norse did enjoy one of their better showings from long range with three 3-pointers apiece from Terry and Taugher. However, the Vikings shot 45.2 percent from the field while holding the Norse to 34.0 percent with a 34-16 advantage in the paint and 25 points off turnovers to gain the edge in the contest.
SCOUTING OAKLAND: The Golden Grizzlies hold a 15-11 record entering Friday's contest, and are currently fifth in the Horizon League sporting a 9-6 mark. Following a 71-61 setback at Detroit Mercy, Oakland has bounced back with dominating wins at Valparaiso, 98-60, and UIC, 78-50.
Sophomore guard Taylor Jones has led the Golden Grizzlies in scoring this season with 14.1 points per game, while senior forward Hannah Little is productive for the team on both ends of the court, averaging a double-double on the season with 11.3 ppg and 11.8 rebounds per game, also pacing the team with 3.3 steals and 1.1 blocks a game. Her numbers are also some of the best in the League, with Little leading all players in rebounding and steals.
As a team, the Golden Grizzlies have the top scoring offense in the Horizon League and 24th in the nation at 76.1 ppg. Oakland is also the top team in the League in rebounds per game (40.8), steals per game (11.7) and turnovers forced (19.2). However, in League play, the Golden Grizzlies have been winning by a slimmer margin of 5.8 ppg, but have remained near the top in their signature statistical categories.
NKU and Oakland have met nine times in the history of the two programs, with the Golden Grizzlies holding a 6-3 advantage in the all-time series. The series was renewed after more than 15 years of hiatus upon NKU joining the Horizon League in 2015-16. The Norse fell to Oakland earlier this season at BB&T Arena, with the Golden Grizzlies claiming a 61-47 win on Jan. 27.
