@NKUNorseBSB falls short against YSU, 8-7

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team scored each of its runs on homers on Saturday including five runs across the sixth and seventh innings but was unable to overcome its deficit, dropping its first Horizon League game, 8-7, against YSU.
 
NKU falls to 9-16 overall and 4-1 in Horizon League play as YSU improves to 6-17 and 3-5 in conference play.
 
At the Plate
  • The Norse continued to have balanced offense with eight different players getting a hit in the game. They out-hit the Penguins 12-10 but stranded six in the loss.
  • Kyle Colletta, Trey Ganns, TJ Alas and Mike Moffatt each posted a pair of hits.
  • Colletta, Ganns, Jake Richmond and Dominic Mercurio each posted a home run. Richmond's homer scored three to give the junior a team-best three RBI on the day.
  • YSU's Andrew Kendrick went 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI.
On the Mound
  • Reliever Cameron Ross threw 3.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts to end the game. Three Penguins reached base against Ross, two on a pair of singles and one on an error. The righty threw 50 pitches, 38 for strikes.
  • Ganns made his seventh start on the mound this season and struck out the side to open the game. The junior threw 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on six hits. He struck out a season-high six batters and walked one.
  • Travis Rowland took over in the fifth followed by Jordan Menfee who picked up the first out in the sixth before being relieved by Ross. 
Key Moments
  • YSU took its first lead of the series in the second inning off a solo homer from Kendrick.
  • In the home half of the second, Colletta fired one over the left-centerfield wall to score two and take a 2-1 lead.
  • The Penguins' Kendrick answered back with a three-run blast in the third to take the lead for good at 4-2.
  • Youngstown State tagged on a run in the fourth on an RBI single, then put up three more in the sixth on a wild pitch, RBI single and sacrifice fly. The Penguins led 8-2 through five and a half.
  • Mercurio sparked the Norse offense in the sixth with a solo homer to left-center. Then with two on and two out, Richmond hammered one to right-center to score three and close the gap to 8-6.
  • A solo shot by Ganns in the seventh was the last scored by the Norse as they were unable to plate the game-tying run in the final two innings.
Norse Notes
  • NKU blasted four homers on Saturday and has nine in the last two games, scoring 16 of NKU's last 22 runs. The Norse have 23 total home runs this season, 14 of which have come in their five Horizon League games.
  • Alas has batted .500 (5-for-10) with a double, two homers, five RBI and four runs scored in the last two games against the Penguins.
  • Ross made his League-leading 16th appearance out of the bullpen on Saturday. In his last 10 appearances, Ross has tossed 15.2 innings and owns a 0.57 ERA. He has allowed 12 hits, just two runs (one earned) and has struck out 14 while walking two in that span.
  • Additionally, Ross has tossed 9.2 scoreless innings against Horizon League foes this year, fanning nine and giving up just one extra-base hit – a double.
  • The Norse are batting .331 and slugging .613 against HL teams with seven doubles, one triple and 14 home runs across five games.
