CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky women's tennis took on Cleveland State looking to take the first Horizon League match off the Vikings, but CSU retained its unblemished record with a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon. NKU drops to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in League play, while Cleveland State advances to 9-8 (3-0 HL).
Match Notables
- Katja Dijanezevic and Danielle Donahue started off the match with a 6-2 win over Aleksandra Golawska and Blanche Lenoan in No. 3 doubles, but NKU fell in tight matchups in the No. 1 and 2 spots for CSU to take the doubles point.
- Cleveland State got out to a 3-0 lead over the Norse with straight-set wins in No. 3 and 4 singles, but Margita Sunjic put on a gritty performance in the No. 1 slot over Isabella Spindler, with both sets going extra games. Sunjic held off a late surge in the opening set for a 7-5 win before outlasting her opponent, 7-6(3) in the second.
- In No. 2 singles, Klara Skopac went three sets with Victoria Bensimon, with every set going 6-4. Skopac took the opening set, but Bensimon rattled off two-straight wins to clinch the match for the Vikings.
- NKU picked up two more wins to close out the match. In No. 5 singles, Danielle Donahue handily defeated Jana Schober 6-2 in the first set, but had to battle back from being down 4-3 before winning 7-6(3). Sierra Nellessen came out strong in the opening set against Lenoan in No. 6 singles before dropping the second, 6-3. She emerged victorious in the tiebreak, winning it 1-0(7) to give the Norse their third point.
