HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky women's tennis dropped its third-straight 4-3 match to Youngstown State, which was favored to take this year's Horizon League Title. The Norse saw wins in the top three singles matches, including freshman
Margita Sunjic taking down the reigning HL Player of the Year Dominika Lackova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. With the loss, NKU dips to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in League play, while YSU advances to 9-8 (3-1 HL).
Match Notables
- Youngstown State took the opening point with wins in No. 2 and 3 doubles.
- The Norse got their first win courtesy of Klara Skopac in No. 2 singles, who bounced back from a three-set defeat yesterday to drop just two games to Noelly Nsimba with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
- Sunjic made it her fifth-straight victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over reigning HL Player of the Year Lackova in the No. 1 spot, with all five wins by way of a straight-set victory. Her win tied the match up at 2-2 following a YSU win in No. 5 singles.
- The Penguins took the lead after winning the No. 6 singles match, and the final two matches went to a third set to determine the overall outcome. In the No. 3 spot, Sydney Power posted a 6-4 win over Sofia Macias in the opening set before suffering a 6-0 second set. Power established an early lead in the tiebreak set and went on to tie the match at 3-3 after winning 6-4 over Macias in the third.
- Katja Dijanezevic took on Imaan Hassim in No. 4 singles in the match that would serve as the clinching point. Hassim claimed a convincing win in the first, 6-1, before Dijanezevic forced the third set with a 6-2 second-set win. The two traded games until 4-4 before Hassim won the last two to win it 6-4 and clinch the match for the Penguins.
- NKU continues League play next weekend when the Norse host Valparaiso and UIC. Both matches will begin at 11 a.m. ET and proceed the men's matches, with Valpo on Saturday, April 8, and UIC on Sunday, April 9.
