@NKUNorseBSB falls short in 5-3 loss to WSU

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team scored each of its three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but fell short as Wright State claimed the weekend series with a 5-3 win at Bill Aker Baseball Complex on Saturday.

The Norse dip to 15-27 overall and 8-10 in the Horizon League. The Raiders improve to 29-12 overall and 15-3 in League play.

At the Plate On the Mound
  • Starter Brody Basilone (0-4) absorbed the loss after holding WSU to three runs in 5.0 innings of work. He gave up four hits and fanned a season-high five batters with one walk.
  • Jordan Menfee allowed three hits as two runs crossed against him, both of which were unearned. Menfee threw 3.0 innings.
  • Joe Martin pitched the eighth and allowed two hits.
Key Moments
  • The Norse avoided the shutout in the bottom of the ninth inning. Chad Roberts and Moffatt led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Moffatt then scored on an error following a Richmond single to cut the WSU lead to 5-1.
  • Alas drove in Richmond and Conor Ledger on an RBI double to left, but those would be the final runs for the Norse as the game ended with a fly out.
  • Wright State's five runs were split among the third and sixth innings.
  • Basilone retired six of the first seven batters he faced, but Wright State broke through for three runs off four hits in the top of the third for its 3-0 advantage. Runs scored on a fielder's choice, RBI single and RBI double.
  • Both teams left a pair of runners in scoring position in the fourth inning.
  • WSU then scored the last of its runs on a throwing error with two outs in the top of the sixth to lead 5-0.
Norse Notes
  • Alas has now reached base in 33-straight games. He also surpassed Trey Ganns for the team lead in doubles with 16.
  • Menfee has allowed just two earned runs in his last 18.0 innings of work. He has thrown three or more innings in four of his appearances out of the bullpen this season.
