@NKUNorseBSB posts 31 hits in doubleheader sweep over Oakland

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky baseball team posted 31 total hits on the day, with 17 in the first game and 14 in the second as the Norse cruised to a doubleheader sweep over Horizon League foe Oakland by scores of 12-7 and 10-5.

Northern Kentucky is now 19-30 on the season and 12-13 in the Horizon League. Oakland dips to 12-35 (9-16 HL).

NKU hit .408 as a team on the day led by Trey Ganns' 5-for-8 showing with a double, a home run and five RBI. Brad Bohlen also had five hits to go along with three RBI while Kyle Colletta, Dominic Mercurio and TJ Alas had four hits apiece on Friday.

GAME ONE | Northern Kentucky 12, Oakland 7

NKU took game one with the help of a six-run seventh inning. NKU scored in four-straight frames to overcome an early 3-0 deficit.

At the Plate
  • Jake Richmond and Mercurio had three hits in game one while Ganns was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI.
  • Will Haueter had two RBI and knocked his first collegiate home run.
On the Mound
  • Starter Jean-Francois Dionne got the win to move to 4-4 on the season. Dionne threw a season-high 6.2 innings with 10 hits, five runs, two walks and four strikeouts. Between the third and sixth innings, Dionne retired 11 of his 13 batters faced in that span.
  • Cameron Ross picked up the final out in the seventh, facing one batter.
  • Travis Rowland closed the game with 2.0 innings of work. He allowed three hits and two runs.
Key Moments
  • Oakland scored three runs on four hits and a Norse error in the second inning for an early advantage.
  • NKU took over from there, scoring runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh.
  • Bohlen scored Mercurio on a triple in the fourth before two crossed in the fifth on a solo homer off the bat of Haueter and a Mercurio RBI double to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Ganns' three-run homer put NKU ahead 6-3 in the sixth as the offensive momentum rolled into the seventh, in which NKU scored six runs on seven hits to put the game out of reach of Oakland.
GAME TWO | Northern Kentucky 10, Oakland 5

Another big inning was the difference-maker in game two, with the Norse scoring five runs in the third inning en route to the 10-5 victory.

At the Plate
  • Ganns and Bohlen posted three hits apiece in game two. Bohlen added two RBI while Ganns had one.
  • Colletta also had a multi-hit showing and game-high three RBI.
  • Chad Roberts was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
On the Mound
  • Starter Charlie Jerger got the win in game two, tossing 5.0 innings with just three runs allowed. He gave up eight hits, struck out three and walked one.
  • Seth Rosenberg contributed 2.0 innings of one-run baseball. The Golden Grizzlies managed three hits against the right-hander.
  • Joe Martin tossed the final 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and one run with a walk and a strikeout.
Key Moments
  • Oakland again drew first blood, claiming a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, which was short lived as NKU scored two in the home half of the inning and led the rest of the way.
  • NKU's five-run third was all it would need to seal the win. The Norse scored on RBI hits from Ganns, Roberts, Colletta and Bohlen. A run also crossed on a Mercurio groundout.
  • The Norse led 7-1 through three.
  • Two runs on three hits in the fifth made it a 9-1 lead, but Oakland scored three runs across the next two innings to cut the NKU advantage to 9-4. Each team scored one more run to close it out.
Norse Notes
  • The Norse posted their second HL doubleheader sweep of the season with the first coming in a doubleheader against Milwaukee on March 19.
  • TJ Alas extended his on-base streak to 40 games.
  • Ten of NKU's 31 total hits were for extra bases as the Norse hit .403 as a team with a .597 slugging percentage across both games of the twinbill.
  • In his last 5.2 innings of work, Rosenberg has allowed just one earned run and has fanned five.
  • Ganns improved his League-leading RBI total to 48.
