HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky women's basketball concludes the regular season on the road, traveling to IUPUI for a 5 p.m. ET game on Sunday, Feb. 25. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with streaming available on computers, tablets, smart phones and streaming devices through WatchESPN and the ESPN App.
LAST TIME OUT: The Norse dropped a 73-55 decision to UIC after the Flames had an uncharacteristically strong outing from beyond the arc, going 8-for-11 on 3-point attempts.
Molly Glick and
Taryn Taugher paced NKU with 13 points apiece, while
Mikayla Terry had another impressive stat line with 12 points, four assists, four steals and a pair of blocks.
SCOUTING IUPUI: A win for the Jaguars on Sunday would clinch the No. 2 seed for IUPUI, as the team currently holds sole possession of second in the Horizon League standings with a 12-5 mark while Milwaukee, Wright State and Cleveland State are all tied for third at 11-6. The Jaguars are coming off their first back-to-back losses of the season, falling to Milwaukee by a 67-60 count on Feb. 19 before last night's 66-63 setback to Wright State.
IUPUI has a balance of putting up points and keeping opponents from doing the same, ranking second in the league in both scoring offense (72.2 ppg) and scoring defense (59.7 ppg), which equates to the No. 41 scoring margin nationally. The Jaguars are also the most efficient club in the league with a 45.7 shooting percentage. Since entering league play, the Jaguars have become the top scoring team in the league, not far off their overall average at 70.2 ppg at a .467 clip, and have upped their defensive presence by holding teams to 57.1 ppg. In addition to buckets, the Jaguars are holding league opponents to just 28.6 rebounds a game and hold the second-highest rebounding margin at +7.7
Individually, the senior-freshman tandem of Danielle Lawrence and Macee Williams has been averaging 32.1 ppg at a .561 clip in league play, with Williams leading the Horizon with a .655 field goal percentage. Lawrence, a two-time First Team All-Summit League honoree, has also established herself as a threat from beyond the arc, averaging 2.6 3-pointers a game.
NKU has a rich history against the Jaguars and hold an 18-2 all-time advantage in the series. The series contains just three meetings since NKU transitioned to Division I, with IUPUI holding the 2-1 edge.
POSTSEASON SEEDING: Heading into the final game of the regular season, NKU and Oakland are jockeying for the seventh seed in the Horizon League Championship with 6-11 records. The No. 9 and 10 seed have been clinched by Detroit Mercy and UIC, respectively, and neither the Norse nor the Golden Grizzlies could jump Youngstown State's 10-7 mark. NKU is guaranteed to play on the first day of the tournament on Friday, March 2, but there are a few scenarios that could play out to determine whether the Norse will face the No. 9 Titans or No. 10 Flames in the first round. Oakland will play Milwaukee in its regular-season finale.
-If NKU wins against IUPUI, it will be guaranteed the No. 7 seed regardless of Oakland's game against Milwaukee, because NKU would break a tie based on highest-seeded common opponent win with its Dec. 30 victory over top-seeded Green Bay. NKU would then play UIC in the first round.
-If both NKU and Oakland lose, the Norse would hold the tiebreak advantage and take the No. 7 seed and play UIC in the first round.
-If NKU loses and Oakland wins, the Norse will fall to the No. 8 seed and play Detroit Mercy in the first round.
ROOKIES IN THE RANKS: NKU has had some key performances from its freshman class, which has come in to contribute right away. Two rookies help lead the team in rebounding (
Kailey Coffey - 6.0 rpg;
Grace White - 3.9 rpg) to keep the Norse at a +2.3 rebounding margin over opponents, a number that ranks fifth in the Horizon League. Coffey has the 12th-highest rebounding average in the Horizon League, and sits at seventh in the League with 2.3 offensive boards a game Since entering League play, Coffey has been averaging 9.1 points per game at a .505 clip, a shooting percentage that ranks among the League's top performers. Both Coffey and White have been honored as the Horizon League Freshman of the Week during the season, making NKU the only institution this year to have two different rookies honored.
