HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky women's basketball remains at home this Sunday, Jan. 27, as the Norse play host to Oakland at 2 p.m. ET. The game will serve as NKU's Bring Your Scout and Spirit Squad, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
LAST TIME OUT: NKU hosted its annual Victor's Hoops 4 Health Day, which welcomed more than 3,000 local elementary school students on Friday afternoon. The Norse treated the crowd with a 68-56 win over Detroit Mercy, which was marked by a dominant 52-22 advantage in rebounding as the Norse had more offensive boards (23) than the Detroit Mercy squad had total rebounds.
Taylor Clos drilled five 3-pointers en route to 19 points, while
Molly Glick added four triples for 14 points.
Jazmyne Geist and
Ally Niece joined the pair in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Geist was just one rebound shy of her first career double-double, and put on a gritty performance on both ends of the court, drawing 15 of UDM's 30 fouls.
Kailey Coffey also contributed heavily with career highs in rebounds (16) and assists (5).
SCOUTING OAKLAND: The Golden Grizzlies sit at 4-15 overall and 1-7 in Horizon League action following a 69-58 loss at Wright State. Oakland has yet to win a road contest, going 0-7 in away games. In Horizon League games, the Golden Grizzlies sport a -13.0 scoring margin, putting up 59.0 points per game while allowing opponents to score 72.0 ppg. The team's strongest statistic since entering league play is its 3-point field goal percentage defense, as the Golden Grizzlies sit at second in the league standings in the statistic, holding league opponents to .250 from beyond the arc.
Taylor Jones has been pacing the team in scoring with 13.1 ppg against league opponents and has dished out a team-high 39 assists. Kahlaijah Dean has also been impactful in her rookie season, posting 8.9 ppg thanks to her 3-point shooting, as 17 of her 25 made field goals have come from 3-point range. Chloe Guingrich leads the Golden Grizzlies on the boards with 8.1 rebounds per game, and is also the top defensive player with 13 steals.
Oakland holds an 8-4 advantage in the all-time series, but the two teams have picked up three wins apiece since NKU's transition to Division I. The Norse claimed a 66-59 victory in the last meeting on Feb. 8, 2018 inside the friendly confines of BB&T Arena.
