@NKUNorseBSB set to face Kentucky on Wednesday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team makes the short trip to Lexington on Wednesday to face Kentucky. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network +. Live audio and stats will also be available.

SERIES HISTORY
The Norse are 2-12 all-time against the Wildcats, but NKU has won two of the past three meetings. The Norse defeated No. 6 Kentucky last season on March 7, 2018, by a final score of 8-6. It was NKU's second win over a ranked program since its move to Division I. The Norse also defeated UK on March 29, 2016, by a score of 5-4. The Wildcats were ranked No. 12 in that matchup.
 
TAKING A LOOK AT THE NORSE
NKU is 0-6 on the year. The Norse recently dropped two close games against North Carolina A&T, a team that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago. The teams played a doubleheader this past Sunday, with North Carolina A&T winning by scores of 3-0 and 4-3.
Freshman Noah Fisher leads the team with a .435 batting average. He has 10 hits, including two doubles and a home run. He has also recorded three runs and two RBI. Freshman Griffin Kain is hitting at a .308 clip to begin the season. Andrew Bacon is batting .286 on the year with two doubles, a triple, two runs and an RBI.
Proctor Mercer is likely to get the start on the mound Wednesday. In his first collegiate outing against Tennessee, the freshman pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and four walks, while striking out a batter.
 
SCOUTING KENTUCKY
The Wildcats are 3-3 to begin the year. After beginning the season with a series sweep of Austin Peay, Kentucky was swept by Texas Tech this past weekend. Ryan Shinn leads the team with a .474 batting average. He has nine hits, including five doubles and a home run. He also has seven runs scored and four RBI. Jaren Shelby is hitting at a .360 clip. He has recorded eight RBI and six runs scored. As a team, the Wildcats have a 7.41 ERA.
 
Kentucky is in action today at home against Eastern Kentucky. It will be the grand-opening game of the team's new stadium, Kentucky Proud Park.
 
BOBBY FONG AWARD
The NKU baseball team was named the recipient of the Horizon League's Bobby Fong Award in 2018. The award encompasses the league's values of integrity, respect and stewardship and is presented to one current Horizon League student-athlete or team. The award is named for the late Dr. Bobby Fong, a former Butler University president who served on the Horizon League Board of Directors from 2001-2011. The NKU baseball team has historically been the leader of the athletic department in the area of community service and impact. The team participates in a number of volunteer opportunities throughout the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati areas.
 
UP NEXT
The Norse travel to Lexington, Virginia to face VMI. The series begins on Friday, March 1 with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
