HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team hosts Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday for the first home game of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex, and live stats will be available.

TAKING A LOOK AT THE NORSE
The Norse are 1-11 on the year. The team most recently fell in a series to Alabama. Griffin Kain leads the team with a .346 batting average. He has a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Noah Fisher is hitting at a .279 clip this season. Fisher has recorded two doubles, two home runs, three RBI, and six runs scored. Griffin Doersching leads the team with nine RBI.
 
NKU is likely to start freshman Proctor Mercer on the mound. He has made two starts in three appearances. He has a 3.12 ERA, striking out seven batters in 8.2 innings of work.
 
SCOUTING MIAMI
The RedHawks are 11-3 on the year. Miami most recently swept fellow Horizon League member Youngstown State in a four-game series. Among qualified hitters, the RedHawks have four batting over .300. Cole Andrews leads the team with a .390 average. He has 16 hits, including two home runs and double. Andrews also has eight RBI and 13 runs scored. Cristian Tejada is batting at a .368 clip with seven doubles, six RBI and nine runs.
 
On the mound, NKU is likely to see Nick Urbantke. He has made three appearances, pitching 7.0 innings. Urbantke has allowed just two hits and hasn't given up a run.
 
BOBBY FONG AWARD
The NKU baseball team was named the recipient of the Horizon League's Bobby Fong Award in 2018. The award encompasses the league's values of integrity, respect and stewardship and is presented to one current Horizon League student-athlete or team. The award is named for the late Dr. Bobby Fong, a former Butler University president who served on the Horizon League Board of Directors from 2001-2011. The NKU baseball team has historically been the leader of the athletic department in the area of community service and impact. The team participates in a number of volunteer opportunities throughout the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati areas.
 
UP NEXT
The Norse open up Horizon League play at home this weekend against Youngstown State. The series begins on Friday, March 15, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex. The games on Friday and Saturday will be broadcast on ESPN3.
