@NKUNorseBSB wins both games against Youngstown State on Thursday

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team picked up a win in both games of a doubleheader at Youngstown State on Thursday. NKU won the first game 10-8 and the second game by a score of 7-6. NKU moves to 10-27 on the year and 8-9 in Horizon League play. YSU falls to 8-31 overall and 4-13 in the league.
  
GAME ONE: NKU 10, YSU 8
AT THE PLATE  
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Sam Williams (W, 3-7) got the start and earned the win on the mound. He pitched six innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out five hitters.
  • Kaleb Meeks entered the game in the seventh inning. He threw 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks. He also struck out a batter.
  • Joe Martin pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn his fourth save of the season. He gave up just one hit and also struck out a batter.
 
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • The Norse took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, Wakeham hit a two-run single to score Bacon and Doersching. In the next at-bat, Luty delivered a two-run double to left center, which brought home Wakeham and Jake Murray.
  • YSU crossed the plate three times in the bottom of the second to make the score 4-3. Cameron Murray recorded a two-run double in the frame, and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Web Charles.
  • The Penguins tied the game at 4-4 in the third. Blaze Glenn's RBI single brought home Phillip Glasser.
  • YSU went ahead 5-4 in the fourth. Glasser's RBI single gave Charles the opportunity to score.
  • NKU got a run back in the sixth to make the score 5-5. Noah Fisher reached on an error, and Wakeham scored on the play.
  • The Norse took an 8-5 lead in the top of the seventh. Bacon hit an RBI single to score Hedges, who also singled earlier in the frame. Later in the inning, Wakeham singled to center field to bring home Bacon, and Murray also scored on the play after a throwing error.
  • Pilat led off the eighth inning with a solo home run to extend the lead to 9-5.
  • Youngstown State scored three times in the bottom half of the eighth to cut the NKU lead to one, 9-8. Jeff Wehler hit a double, moved to third on a fly out, and scored on a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Glasser hit a two-run double.
  • The Norse added an insurance run in the ninth. Bacon hit a double down the left field line and scored later in the inning on a throwing error to give NKU a 10-8 advantage.
 
 
GAME TWO: NKU 7, YSU 6
 
AT THE PLATE
  • Murray batted 4-for-5 in game two with a triple and an RBI.
  • Bacon went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.
  • Hedges was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.
  • Haueter also went 1-for-3, and he added a double and two RBI.
  • Wakeham batted 1-for-3 with a run.
  • Luty was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.
  • Fisher also had a hit in the contest.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Kyle Service (W, 1-4) pitched five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks. He also struck out four hitters.
  • Noah Richardson pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out four batters.
  • Martin earned his second save of the day. He threw the final inning, giving up an unearned run on two hits. He also struck out a better.
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • The Norse went ahead 2-0 in the first inning. Bacon's RBI single brought home Hedges, who walked in the frame. In the next at-bat, Murray hit a triple down the left field line to score Bacon.
  • YSU took a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the first. Blaze Glenn's sacrifice fly brought home Lucas Nasonti, and Drew Dickerson's RBI double scored Trevor Wiersma. Dickerson also scored in the inning off of an error.
  • NKU responded with three runs in the top of the second to go ahead 5-3. Wakeham hit a single to start the inning, and he moved to second on Luty's double. Pilat walked to load the bases, and Wakeham scored on a sacrifice fly by Hedges to tie the game at 3-3. In the next at-bat, Haueter hit a two-run double to left center to bring home Pilat and Luty.
  • Bacon hit a solo home run in the fifth to extend the NKU lead to 6-3.
  • YSU got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6-5. Zach Lopatka hit a two-run single in the frame.
  • The Norse added a run in the top of the eighth to go ahead 7-5. Bacon hit a sacrifice fly, which brought home Hedges, who had reached on a bunt single in the inning.
  • YSU got a run back in the ninth. Wehler hit an RBI double to score Wiersma, but NKU held on for the 7-6 win.
 
NOTES
  • Bacon's homer was his fourth of the year.
  • Murray recorded his second triple this season.
  • Haueter hit the 54th double of his career, which puts him in a tie for second place in NKU's record books with Jason Cisper (2008-11). He needs four more doubles to catch Evan McDole's record of 58. McDole played for the Norse from 2007-10.
