ROCHESTER, Mich. – Northern Kentucky women's tennis fell to Oakland in the final match of the regular season, 5-2. With NKU's setback, NKU tied for sixth in the standings, but dropped to seventh in the tiebreak scenario due to Wright State's win over Detroit Mercy and Youngstown State's win over IUPUI, missing out on the Horizon League Tournament field. NKU ends the season at 7-12 overall and 3-6 in league play, while Oakland earned the No. 3 seed with a 7-2 mark.
Match Notables
- Oakland used wins in No. 1 and 3 doubles to claim the opening point, barely edging the Norse on the top court as Ava Thielman and Darya Maltseva defeated Margita Sunjic and Taylor Culbertson, 7-6(2).
- Maria Koo and Elizabeth Rozin posted a doubles win in the No. 2 spot, defeating Alexandra Whall and Amanda Nilsson, 6-3.
- Koo also delivered a win in singles on the No. 2 court, taking down Maltseva in three sets. Koo won the opening set, 6-3, before dropping a 6-4 second set. She went on to win the deciding pro set, 10-4. Koo finished the season with an 8-1 mark in league play and went 13-5 overall for the winningest record on the team.
- Culbertson also recorded a singles victory in her final collegiate match. In No. 4 singles, she went an extended first set against Whall, winning 7-5, before quickly dispatching her opponent in the second set, 6-1.
- Sunjic went three sets in the top flight, but eventually fell to Thielman. Sunjic took the first set, 7-5, but Thielman answered back with a 6-1 second set. The deciding pro set was a tightly-contested one, with Thielman winning it, 12-10.
