INDIANAPOLIS – Carter McCray is having one of the best starts to a center's career in Northern Kentucky women's basketball history, and people are starting to take notice as she was named the Horizon League's Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, announced by the league office on Monday.
The first-year center from Oberlin, Ohio continued her stellar start to her NKU career as she averaged 9.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in games against Power 5 Illinois and Kentucky State. She grabbed 10 rebounds against the Fighting Illini and followed it up with a 17-point, eight rebound performance in a victory over the Thorobreds on Saturday.
The 10-rebound game against Illinois was especially noteworthy, as it was the most boards allowed to an opposing student-athlete by the Fighting Illini so far this season. Before McCray, the best mark went to Michigan's Cameron Williams, who pulled down nine.
With yet another standout week, McCray finds herself atop the Horizon leader board in rebounds per game (9.1) and is also tied for ninth in the conference in scoring (12.8 points per contest).
It was her second conference weekly award so far this season, as she also claimed the honor back on November 20.
The Norse hit the road for four straight games outside of Highland Heights, which gets underway with a showdown against Tennessee Tech in a non-conference clash on Monday, December 18. Tip is set for 7 PM ET from the Hooper Eblen Center.
