HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University Athletics is creating leaders on the field of competition, in the classroom and in the community, and the program's excellence in academic endeavors has continued as the Norse recorded a school record for highest GPA in athletics history.
For the 2023 Spring semester, NKU student-athletes achieved a 3.52 department-wide GPA. It is the second straight semester Northern Kentucky student-athletes have raised the standard, as this semester's new high mark replaced the old record that was just set this past Fall.
To go with being a new department best, it was the 24th straight semester with a department GPA of 3.0 or higher and the 18th consecutive semester featuring a department GPA of 3.2 or higher. To go even further, it was also the 12th straight semester in which NKU student-athletes finished with a GPA of 3.37 or better.
"It was a record-setting year both on the field of competition and in the classroom for our student-athletes here at Northern Kentucky University," vice president and director of athletics Christina Roybal said. "Semester after semester and year after year, Norse student-athletes go above and beyond in the classroom. I want to thank our student-athletes for all of their hard work for back-to-back semesters of setting a new department record and congratulate our 43 student-athletes who just walked across the stage with their diplomas just a short time ago."
Every single sport offering at NKU earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher, led by women's volleyball (3.71) and women's golf (3.71). Women's tennis (3.67), women's soccer (3.66), women's cross country (3.65), women's softball (3.63) and women's track & field (3.58) also posted high marks while the top men's GPAs belonged to track & field (3.49), cross country (3.48) and soccer (3.45).
Men's track & field, men's cross country and men's basketball (3.22) all set new program records for best cumulative GPA recorded during a single semester.
In total, NKU had 40 student-athletes earn President's Honors status (recorded a GPA of 4.0 while attempting 12 or more credits), and an additional 77 awarded Dean's List honors (a GPA of 3.6-3.99). Forty-five student-athletes, or 19 percent of the department, finished with a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Spring semester.
