Women's Basketball Announces 2023-24 Horizon League Schedule

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's basketball program and head coach Camryn Volz (Whitaker) along with the Horizon League announced the 2023-24 conference schedule Tuesday afternoon, which features 20 games against familiar foes.

"This year's Horizon League schedule is another challenging one, as we will get tested early in December against defending champions Cleveland State," said Coach Volz. "As always, our conference proves to be competitive, and we look forward to each game and starting out quest for a championship!"

The Horizon League is implementing an enhanced approach to its men's and women's basketball schedules for the upcoming 2023-24 season in a major move for student-athletes and supporters. The improved approach offers the competitive equity of a non-travel partner schedule while also offering the sustainability benefits of a travel-partner schedule contributing to a better student-athlete experience.

Northern Kentucky will kick-off Horizon League action beginning with reigning conference tournament champion Cleveland State on December 2. The Norse will look to get revenge on the Vikings from a season ago where CSU snuck away with a 63-60 over NKU in the Horizon League Tournament semifinals. The Norse close out 2023 with a home match-up with the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland.

NKU will then open the new year on January 1, 2024, on the road against the Titans of Detroit Mercy. The Norse return to Truist Arena for a home series with both Green Bay and Milwaukee on January 5 and 7 respectively, before heading over to Indianapolis to take on the Jaguars of IUPUI on the 14th. A pair of home games in mid-January will be up next for NKU, hosting both Robert Morris on the 17th and archrival Wright State on the 20th. The month rounds out at Youngstown State (Jan. 24), at Purdue Fort Wayne (Jan. 27) and then home against Detroit Mercy (Jan. 31).

February will see Northern Kentucky inside Truist Arena for four total games, beginning the month off with a match-up against Oakland at home on the 2nd. The Norse will then travel north to face both Green Bay and Milwaukee on February 8 and February 10 respectively. A quick pit stop at Highland Heights to host IUPUI on February 14 and then NKU returns to the road against rival Wright State on the 17th. The final home stand for NKU in 2024 will be on February 21 and February 24 against Purdue Fort Wayne and Youngstown State respectively. The regular season will conclude with an away series first at Robert Morris on February 27 and lastly against Cleveland State on March 2.

The benefits of the new Horizon League model include:
  • Better student-athlete experience: minimizes missed class time and maximizes recovery time.
  • More sustainability: keeping strategic geographic road trips to minimize travel costs.
  • More competitive equity: a team's schedule is no longer dependent on former travel partner's facility conflicts; minimizes extended stretches of road games and time away from home.
  • Basketball excellence: better positions League champion for an improved seed path; better positions student-athletes to play at peak performance throughout the entirety of League schedule.
The Horizon League women's basketball schedule will feature:
  • 20-game double-round robin.
  • 11-week schedule starting on Nov. 29 for up to two games and resuming on Dec. 28.
  • Regular season finale on March 2.
  • Opening rounds of Horizon League Basketball Championship on March 5 and 7.
  • Semifinals and Championship games in Indianapolis March 11-12. #MarchStartsHere
