Women's Soccer set to battle Milwaukee for Horizon League Championship

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Northern Kentucky women's soccer has advanced to the Horizon League Championship match for the second straight season, and the Norse could not be peaking at a better time, coming into Saturday's match riding a seven match winning streak. 

NKU took down Detroit Mercy 1-0 on Thursday night in Milwaukee and will take on the hosting Panthers for the championship on Saturday at 2 PM ET.

CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES

  • Northern Kentucky and Milwaukee both come into the match tied for the nation's longest winning streak at seven matches. 
  • Milwaukee was the last team to defeat NKU, with a 2-0 victory over the Norse on September 19. NKU has not been beaten in 50 days. 
  • NKU and Milwaukee combined for four of the five #HLWSOC postseason awards, with NKU's Lydia Self winning Defensive Player of the Year and Milwaukee's Lainey Higgins,  Kayla Rollins, and Parker Donahugh taking home Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, and Goalkeeper of the Year,  respectively. 
  • NKU and Milwaukee took up eight of the 11 spots on the All-League First Team. Lilly Yordy and Lydia Self represented the Norse. 

SERIES HISTORY

  • Northern Kentucky is 1-8-3 all-time vs. Milwaukee, with the lone win for the Norse coming in the 2016 Horizon League Championship match. 
  • Milwaukee defeated NKU in the Horizon League Championship match last season 1-0. 

NORSE NOTES

  • Lilly Yordy has been an offensive force for NKU this season, leading the team in both goals (6) and assists (7) for a total of 19 points. In NKU's seven match winning streak, Yordy has scored four goals either four assists. 
  • Lydia Self, the Horizon League's two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year, is tied for second on the team in goals with five, and leads in game-winning goals with four. She is 2-2 on penalty kicks this season. 
  • Kylie Anderson provided the lone goal in Thursday night's win over Detroit Mercy, her fifth goal of the season and third game winner. Anderson is second on the team in points with 13. 
  • Emilie Doersching's speed has been an asset to NKU this season, as she was credited with an assist (alongside Erykah Cornett) on Anderson's winner in the semifinals. Doersching's lone goal this season was a game-winner in the regular season finale against Wright State. She has four assists on the year. 
  • NKU has scored 30 goals this season, with 12 different players finding the back of the net. 
  • Megan Gessner has emerged as NKU's primary goalkeeper, and is 5-0-0 on the season. Gessner has allowed just three goals in 591 minutes in net for a GAA of 0.46.
