HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky baseball team opened Horizon League play at 3-0 after sweeping Milwaukee in a three-game series at Bill Aker Baseball Complex this weekend. The sweep included a pair of wins in a doubleheader on Sunday by scores of 7-4 and 6-5.

NKU improves to 6-10 overall and 3-0 in the League while Milwaukee dips to 7-11 (0-3 Horizon League).

GAME ONE | Northern Kentucky 7, Milwaukee 4

Norse starter Jean-Francois Dionne held the Panthers to just one run and five hits across the first five innings while the offense got out to a 5-1 lead to win game one.

At the Plate
  • Richmond went 2-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored and a home run.
  • Trey Ganns joined Richmond with a pair of hits to go along with one run and an RBI.
  • Moffatt went 1-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored.
  • NKU totaled eight hits as a team with Will Haueter, Kyle Colletta and Brad Bohlen adding one RBI each.
On the Mound
  • Dionne totaled 6.0 innings in his second start for NKU. He gave up eight hits and three runs while striking out one and walking none. He earned the win to move to 1-1 on the season.
  • Ross threw the final 2.2 innings, holding Milwaukee scoreless on three hits. Ross was awarded his second save of the season.
Key Moments
  • Milwaukee plated a run in the top of the first, but its lead would be short-lived as Richmond belted a home run to straight-away centerfield to knot the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame.
  • A three-run bottom of the second then gave NKU a 4-1 advantage. The Norse clubbed four hits in the inning including three-straight two-out RBI singles from Richmond, Ganns and Haueter.
  • Moffatt launched a solo homer to left-center to lead off the fourth. His homer helped the Norse withstand three Milwaukee runs across the next two innings that made it a one-run game at 5-4 through six and a half.
  • Two NKU runs in the bottom of the seventh and Ross's 2.2 scoreless innings pitched sealed the win.

GAME TWO | Northern Kentucky 6, Milwaukee 5

A two-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the eighth pushed the Norse past Milwaukee in game two, 6-5, after the Panthers held a 5-3 advantage through seven innings.

At the Plate
  • Richmond continued his stellar day at the plate, clubbing his second home run of the day as part of a 3-for-5 showing with three RBI. He extended his team-leading hit streak to 11 games.
  • Colletta, Bohlen and Moffatt also carried over their success from game one, each batting 2-for-4 with an RBI. Colletta also crossed the plate twice for NKU.
On the Mound
  • Pat Kelley got the start, tossing 4.2 innings with eight hits, three runs, four strikeouts and no walks.
  • Jordan Menfee and Charlie Jerger saw action out of the bullpen, totaling 2.0 innings, before Ross entered the game and threw the final 2.1 innings. Ross held the Panthers to just two hits and no runs and picked up his first win as a Norse to move to 1-0.
Key Moments
  • Both teams jumped on the board in the second inning for an early 1-1 tie.
  • Richmond's second homer of the day scored two for a 3-1 edge in the bottom of the third.
  • A Bohlen RBI double in the fourth extended NKU's lead to 4-1, but Milwaukee's Daulton Varsho sent a two-run homer over the right-field wall in the fifth to jumpstart the Panther offense and cut the NKU advantage to 4-3.
  • Milwaukee took a 5-4 lead in the seventh on a pair of RBI singles before Northern Kentucky capitalized on a two-out Panther error that put Colletta aboard in the bottom of the eighth. A Moffatt RBI single pushed the tying run across followed by the game-winning run, scored by Bohlen on a Richmond RBI single.
