ATLANTA – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team scored seven runs across the first three innings en route to earning an 8-7 series finale victory over Georgia State on Sunday at GSU Baseball Complex.
With the win, the Norse avoid the series sweep and improve to 2-8. Georgia State moves to 6-4.
At the Plate
- Junior left fielder Dominic Mercurio drove in three of NKU's first six runs as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI.
- Designated hitter Chad Roberts also posted a trio of hits on a 3-for-4 showing. Roberts drove in one run and crossed the plate twice for NKU.
- The duo combined for six of NKU's 11 total hits.
- Trey Ganns and Jake Richmond scored two runs apiece while TJ Alas and Kyle Colletta added one RBI each.
On the Mound
- Norse starter Pat Kelley held Georgia State to one hit and no runs across his first four innings of work. The Panthers broke through Kelley in the fifth as the junior allowed seven hits and five runs in his 4.0 innings.
- Charlie Jerger tossed 4.0 total innings with four hits and two runs allowed. He walked none and struck out three.
- Cameron Ross earned his first save of the season after tossing the ninth and not allowing a hit.
- The trio of pitchers issued just one walk.
Key Moments
- Northern Kentucky came out swinging and plated three runs on three hits in the top of the first.
- Roberts delivered an RBI double to right field to push Jake Richmond across the plate. Mercurio then knocked an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly from Kyle Colletta that scored Roberts for a 3-0 edge.
- Mercurio hit another RBI single in his next at-bat to bring the Norse lead to 4-0 in the third.
- NKU scored three more in the fourth to lead 4-0. The Norse scored on an error, a wild pitch and Mercurio's third RBI single in three at-bats.
- Georgia State unleashed six hits in the bottom of the fifth to cut the NKU advantage to 7-5. Jerger relieved Kelley with two on and no outs in the fifth and allowed just one inherited runner to score to limit the damage.
- Both teams spotted one run in the seventh inning to bring the score to 8-6.
- GSU threatened to tie it up in the bottom of the ninth as Ross relieved Jerger with two on base and nobody out. Ross helped limit the Panthers to one run in the frame, which was pinned on Jerger.
- Alas helped NKU hang on for the win with a pair of big catches in right field to end the bottom of the ninth.

- Mercurio now leads NKU with a .357 average after going 10-for-28 at the dish in his nine games played.
- The Norse batted .714 (5-for-7) with runners on third and fewer than two outs in the three-game series.
- Ross leads all Norse pitchers with eight appearances across the first 10 games of the season.
- Richmond extended his hit streak to five games as he has reached base in six-straight contests and has reached base in all but one game this season.
- Richmond and Roberts led NKU at the plate in the three-game series at GSU with Richmond batting .455 and Roberts batting .417, each with five hits apiece. Meanwhile, Ganns and Mercurio led with three RBI apiece in the series as they both batted .385.
