INDIANAPOLIS – The Horizon League revealed its end of season awards on Tuesday morning, and Northern Kentucky women's basketball's
Ally Niece was one of five league rookies named to the All-Freshman Team, as voted upon by the league's coaches, media voters and sports information directors. Niece adds the award to a pair of Nike® Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors, which she earned on Jan. 7 and March 4.
"We have continued to focus on our process of daily improvement in our program, and Ally is just one example of that," noted head coach
Camryn Whitaker. "Her growth this year has been remarkable to watch, a credit to Ally and her belief in what we are building at NKU. I couldn't be happier for her to receive this honor!"
Niece led the Norse in scoring during the Horizon League season at 12.1 points per game while also pulling down 4.3 rebounds per game and dishing out 4.1 assists per game. Niece recorded NKU's first points/assists double-double in the Division I era earlier this season, with 12 points and 11 assists versus UIC on Feb. 2.
The rookie point guard ranked in the top-10 among all Horizon League players in the following categories: 3-point field-goal percentage (2
nd, 39.7 percent), free throw percentage (3
rd, 81.5 percent), assists per game (3
rd, 4.1 apg), minutes played (5
th, 32.6 mpg) and points per game (9
th, 12.1 ppg). In all those categories except points per game, Niece ranked first among freshman players, sitting only behind Oakland's Kahlaijah Dean's 12.6 ppg. Her 1.5 assist-to-turnover ratio was just outside the top-10, ranking 11
th among all league players.
The Norse earned the No. 5 seed in the 2019 Little Caesars Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship and will head to No. 4 IUPUI for a quarterfinal matchup later today. Tip-off against the Jaguars is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
