CHICAGO – Northern Kentucky (11-15 Overall, 9-10 Horizon League) split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon against UIC (10-15 Overall, 9-10 Horizon League) at Curtis Granderson Stadium on Friday. UIC took game one, 13-6, while the Norse recovered for an 8-5 victory in game two. The win breaks a three-game losing streak for the Norse.
GAME 1: UIC 13, Northern Kentucky 6
AT THE PLATE
- Jake Wakeham (2-of-3) was the only Norse with multiple hits, batting a single and a double.
- Sam Hedges (1-of-3), Griffin Doersching (1-of-3), Andrew Bacon (1-of-3), and Michael Hall (1-of-3) all ended with a hit apiece.
- Doersching's hit was a grand slam in the second inning, giving him three homers this weekend.
- The Norse reached base on 12-of-23 at-bats, six coming from hits and six coming from walks.
ON THE MOUND
- Kyle Klingenbeck (L, 2-3) earned the start to open the doubleheader. He saw 2.2 innings of action, allowed five hits, and ended with an ERA of 13.13.
- Tyler Ollier came on with two outs in the third, giving him 11 appearances on the year.
- After a third of an inning, Ollier was subbed out for Blaine Walters.
- Walters tossed the final three innings, fanning a pair of batters, and giving up three hits.
KEY MOMENTS
- The Norse allowed the first Flame batter to reach on a fielding error. The Flames then piled on six runs in their half of the first, all of which were unearned.
- Northern Kentucky answered right back in the second, scoring five runs. The first run was scored on an RBI single from Hedges, while the remaining four were scored on a Doersching grand slam.
- UIC then hit a 2-RBI homer to left-center, extending the Flames lead to 8-5.
- With a pair of outs in the third, the Flames drove in three more runs by way of a 3-RBI homer to left field.
- UIC then reached home for the fourth-straight inning. Two runs were scored on an RBI fly out to right field and an RBI single up the middle, respectively.
- With one out in the top of the sixth, Moss hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Doersching.
GAME 2: Northern Kentucky 8, UIC 5
AT THE PLATE
- The Norse reached base 15-of-39 at bats and had a batting average of .282 on the day.
- Treyvin Moss (2-of-5), Bacon (2-of-5), Noah Fisher (2-of-4), and Hedges (2-of-4) each ended with two hits and batted a combined .444.
- Fisher hit a solo homer in the game and Hedges had two extra-base hits.
- John Odom (1-of-4), Hall (1-of-4) and Liam McFadden-Ackman (1-for-5) had a hit apiece.
ON THE MOUND
- Ben Gerl (W, 2-3) saw the mound first in the backend of the doubleheader for his seventh start of the season.
- Gerl owned the mound for 5.1 innings, fanning three batters and giving up four runs on nine hits.
- Ollier came on for relief with a lone out in the sixth. He totaled two-thirds of an inning and faced three batters, walking one.
- Noah Richardson was the third Norse to step on the mound. He tossed the final three innings, allowing just one run.
KEY MOMENTS
- After a double to left by Hedges and a single down the right-field line by Bacon to start the game, Wakeham reached base on a fielder's choice, allowing Hedges to score.
- To start the bottom of the third, the Flames launched a homer to left field, tying the game at one apiece. Four batters later, the Flames hit an RBI single to center field to take the lead.
- With a lone out in the top of the fourth, Odom doubled down the left-field line, driving in three runs.
- Hedges, who was up to bat next, hit a RBI double of his own to score Odom.
- Fisher hit his second home run of the year with two outs in the fifth, making it 6-2 in favor of the Norse.
- The Flames utilized an RBI single up the middle to pull one back in the fifth.
- UIC then made it 6-4 an inning later with the help of an RBI single up the middle.
- NKU responded with two outs in the seventh, scoring two runs through a single by McFadden Ackman and a throwing error by the Flames' shortstop.
- The Flames had a comeback in mind after a home run to left-center in the ninth, but was unable to put any more runs on the board.
