Track & Field places five on 2023 Valeo #HLTF Outdoor All-Academic Teams

INDIANAPOLIS – The Northern Kentucky track & field program had five student-athletes honored for their standout work both on the track and in the classroom as the Horizon League announced its 2023 Valeo #HLTF Outdoor Men's and Women's All-Academic teams on Tuesday afternoon.

Kyle Mastin was named an All-Academic Team honoree on the men's side while Andrea Armstrong and Megan Sullivan each earned selections on the women's All-Academic Team. Jailyn Ross and Jacquelyn Witt were also both named All-Academic Honorable Mentions.

Mastin wrapped up a storied career with his All-Academic selection. This outdoor season, the Covington, Kentucky native placed ninth in the steeplechase and 24th in the 5,000-meter at the Horizon Outdoor Championships. This followed an indoor campaign where he took eighth in the 3,000-meter at the conference championship meet. Off the track, Mastin was a member of NKU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served as the in-game host for the Norse basketball program. He earned a 3.867 GPA as he finished his master's of business administration (MBA).

Armstrong earned an All-Academic nod after a standout season in 2023. The Milford, Ohio native placed ninth in the 400-meter, sixth as a member of the 4x100-relay squad and second as a leg of the 4x400-meter unit at the conference's outdoor championships. This followed a gold in the 4x400 and a seventh-place finish in the 400 at the indoor championships. Armstrong has been a mainstay on the HL's All-Academic team, as she earned the honor in both 2021 and 2022 for indoors and in 2022 for outdoors. She posted a perfect 4.0 GPA as a nursing major.

Sullivan was the third NKU All-Academic team selection after a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles and a second-place performance in the 4x400-meter relay at the HL Outdoor Championships. She also took second in the 400-meter and won the gold in the 4x400 at the indoor championship meet. Sullivan has earned numerous honors on both the Horizon League Honor Roll and NKU's Dean's List. She also competes with the women's soccer program at Northern Kentucky and posted a 4.0 GPA as an exercise science major.

Witt and Ross both earned All-Academic Team Honorable Mention to round out the academic honors for NKU.

Witt finished eighth in the 1,500-meter at the outdoor conference championships and added a second-place finish in the DMR and 17th in the mile at the indoor championships. She earned a 3.917 GPA as a nursing major and was also a member of NKU's SAAC.

Ross finished sixth in the 4x100-meter relay, 14th in the 200-meter and 16th in the 100-meter at the Horizon Outdoor Championships. The Indianapolis, Indiana native also won the 4x400-meter relay, placed second in the DMR and finished 17th in the 200 at the indoor championships. Ross posted a 3.867 GPA with a criminal justice major and a psychology minor. She has been a Horizon League Honor Roll and NKU Dean's List honoree multiple times throughout her career.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Horizon League All-Academic consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least two years at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits, and participate in 50 percent of the team's overall contests.
