Norse Track and Field splits final weekend before the #HLTF Indoor Championships at three different events

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University men's and women's track and field programs competed at three different events this weekend, sending athletes to the GVSU Big Meet, Marshall Invitational, and MSJ February Invitational. It was a successful weekend overall for the Norse, with multiple notable athletes including Olivia Kennedy, Cameron Bitterman, and Natnael Weldemichael all recording big achievements. 

THE BASICS-GVSU

MEET: GVSU Big Meet
LOCATION: Kelly Family Sports Center - Allendale, Mich.
ABOUT: NKU sent just six runners to the GVSU Big Meet, a highly competitive meet that hosted over 90 schools. 
 
NOTABLES
- Natnael Weldemichael ran a 14:17.52 in the 5000m, running in Section #1 and finishing sixth in that section. That time earned him a Provisional Qualification to the NCAA Indoor Championships, a big achievement for the junior from Fort Mitchell. 
- Colton O'Hara finished in 14:28.31 in Section #2 in the 5000m race, a sixth-place finish. 
- Brittany Arnold recorded a time of 18:14.59 in Section #5 of the 5000m race, finishing second in her section. 

THE BASICS-MSJ

MEET: MSJ February Invitational
LOCATION: Centennial Fieldhouse & Austin E. Knowlton Fitness Center - Cincinnati, Ohio
ABOUT: The Norse's largest representation at any meet this weekend, NKU sent 60+ participators. 

NOTABLES
- The Norse dominated in the 800m race on both sides, with Preston Winiger winning the men's race (1:58.45), and Carlie Condit (2:21.25) taking home the women's title. Erica Durst, Brayden Holland, and Gregory Beard also recorded top-five finishes in the 800m. 
- Alden Williams claimed victories in both the long jump (6.29) and triple jump (12.62m).
- Lacey Klare won the 60m hurdles, running a 9.50.
- Alexandra Newman took home a shot put victory with a throw of 12.54m. 
- Nathan Ruth claimed a victory in the men's mile, running a 4:20.95. 
- Samsun Weldemichael won the 3000m, running a 9:01.92.

MEET: Marshall Invitational
LOCATION: Chris Cline Athletic Complex - Huntington, W.V.
ABOUT: The Norse sent 12 student-athletes to Huntington, a meet that hosted 10 schools. 

NOTABLES
- Olivia Kennedy won the 800m race, finishing with a season-best mark of 2:13.58. 
- Reigning #HLTF Female Track Athlete of the Week Cameron Bitterman continued her hot streak with a win in the 400m, running a 56.82. 
- Brady Messer finished second in the 800m with a time of 1:54.62. 
 
NEXT UP
Northern Kentucky University heads to the Horizon League Championships in two weeks. Fort Wayne hosts this year's Championships from March 1-2.
