Pair of HL doubleheaders on tap for @NKUNorseBSB

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky baseball team travels to Wright State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday at Nischwitz Stadium, then turns around for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Milwaukee on Sunday.

Friday's games will be carried on ESPN3 while live stats will be available for each game this weekend.

LAST TIME OUT: The Norse wrap up a stretch of five-straight games against the Raiders after NKU dropped a series to WSU last weekend, taking 1-of-3 games. Wright State won the opener, 7-3, after distributing its runs across five different innings. The Norse scored three run in the bottom of the ninth but fell short in game two, 5-3. They avoided the sweep with a 7-2 win in game three after scoring six runs in the seventh inning. Hurlers Trey Ganns and Cameron Ross allowed just five hits in the contest.

NKU batted .308 as a team across the three-game set while the pitching staff held WSU to a .234 batting average. Mike Moffatt batted .500 (6-for-12) on the weekend while TJ Alas hit .333 (4-for-12) with two doubles, two homers and six RBI. Ross totaled 4.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen against WSU.

NKU IN LEAGUE PLAY: Northern Kentucky is batting .300 as a team in Horizon League contests and has clubbed 32 doubles and 36 homers in 19 games for an average of 1.68 doubles per League game and 1.89 homers per League game. The team owns a .514 slugging percentage in conference play.

Individually in League games this year, Jake Richmond is sporting a .366 batting average while Trey Ganns leads the HL in slugging percentage (.787). Ganns, Richmond and TJ Alas each have a League-best eight homers against League foes.

On the mound, reliever Cameron Ross owns a 3.20 ERA with a .250 opposing batting average in 27.1 innings. Jordan Menfee has given up just three earned runs in 16.0 innings pitched for a 1.69 ERA in League contests.

QUICK HITS:

  • Northern Kentucky leads the League in slugging percentage (.447), runs scored (263), hits (526), RBI (234), doubles (94) and home runs (50) and is second in batting average (.282).

SCOUTING THE RAIDERS: Wright State has been jockeying for the top spot in the Horizon League and enters the weekend in second behind UIC (30-10, 16-3 Horizon) while Northern Kentucky follows WSU in third. The Raiders opened Horizon League play at 11-0. They are 17-3 at home this season.

WSU is tied for sixth in the League in batting average (.256) and is second in ERA at 3.49. Raider pitchers have held opponents to a .246 average. The team has far and away the most stolen bases in the League with 102 on 124 attempts for an average of 2.37 per game, both of which rank second in the NCAA. The speedy Raiders also have 21 triples in 43 games.

Matt Morrow is one of two Raiders batting over .300 and leads with a .325 average. Adrian Marquez has a team-high 37 RBI. WSU has three starting pitchers in the HL's top-5 in ERA led by Danny Sexton (1.70 ERA) and Ryan Weiss (1.78).

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS: Milwaukee enters the weekend with a 16-26 overall record and 6-13 mark in the Horizon League. The Panthers travel to UIC for a doubleheader on Saturday before hosting NKU on Sunday. They currently sit in seventh place in the Horizon League and have won three of their last five.

The team ranks fourth in the HL in batting average at .268 and third in ERA at 4.49. Opponents are batting .260 against the Milwaukee pitching staff.

Daulton Varsho leads the Horizon League with a .382 batting average and .492 on-base percentage. Varsho has nine doubles, five triples and nine home runs. Jon Boidanis is the RBI leader with 32. Jay Peters leads all of Milwaukee's starting pitchers with a 3.24 ERA in 10 starts. Brandon Parr has a team-best three saves in 13 appearances.

SERIES HISTORIES: NKU is 9-14 against Wright State all-time after winning 1-of-3 against the Raiders last weekend. The Norse swept Milwaukee in a three-game series to open Horizon League play this season. The all-time series is now tied at 4-4.

ON DECK: The Norse return home for their final pair of home games next weekend. They host Oakland in a doubleheader on Friday, May 12 at noon. They then face a quick turnaround, traveling to Youngstown State for a doubleheader on Saturday, May 13 at 1 p.m.
