@NKUNorseWSOC routs Green Bay, 5-1, on senior day

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team capped off successful senior day festivities on Sunday afternoon with a 5-1 win over Green Bay. The win keeps NKU's hopes of hosting a Horizon League Tournament game alive.

"Obviously I think our attack was very strong," said head coach Bob Sheehan. "The quality of our finishing has improved drastically and I thought we created some excellent chances that we can score on, but again, we're placing some shots on frame and creating some problems for the opposition.

BETWEEN THE POSTS

  • Senior Jennifer Farwell started the match's first 20 seconds.
  • Mimi Stines then subbed in, made seven saves and allowed the only goal.
  • Sarah Cady appeared for the final 23 minutes at goal.

MATCH SUMMARY

  • NKU's offense had no problem reaching the final third and finding space to execute excellent shot opportunities. Shawna Zaken had two shots in the opening 10 minutes.
  • In the 15th minute, NKU got on the scoreboard with an Ally Perkins goal from assists by Zaken and Lindsey Meyer.
  • Almost exactly four minutes later, Perkins turned her one-goal effort into a brace, moving NKU up to 2-0 lead.
  • Green Bay's defense settled in from there and the Phoenix even generated some shot opportunities.
  • However, the Phoenix struggled on defense as the half closed. Zaken and Chloe Mills each brought in goals for the Norse in the 37th and 38th minutes, respectively, to cushion the Norse lead at 4-0. Stines and Kiley Keehan had assists on Zaken's goal, while Megan Sullivan assisted for Mills' score.
  • Green Bay's Savanna Hayes gave Green Bay a goal in the 54th minute.
  • After several substitutions by the Norse to cruise through the second half with fresh legs, NKU found the net once more in the 79th minute thanks to a cross from Keehan to Meyer, who pelted a shot into the middle of the net.

NORSE NOTES

  • Stines moves up to 78 saves this season with today's contest. That is tied for third-most in a season by a Norse and she is now 10th all-time for the Norse in total saves.
  • The five goals scored by NKU are the most since a 7-1 win over Youngstown State on Sept. 23, 2017.
  • This is the first two-goal effort in Perkins' career.
  • 23 NKU players checked into today's contest.
  • Meyer's and Mills' goal are their second of the season.

UP NEXT

  • The Norse play a road match against Detroit Mercy Friday at 7:00 p.m., to close out the regular-season. The match will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
