Milwaukee tops @NKUNorseBSB in Friday doubleheader

MILWAUKEE – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team fell to Milwaukee in both games of a doubleheader on Friday. The Norse were defeated by a score of 9-8 in the first game, and fell 15-2 in game two. NKU drops to 10-31 overall and 8-12 in the Horizon League. Milwaukee improves to 24-15 and 12-7 in league play.
 
GAME ONE: Milwaukee 9, NKU 8

AT THE PLATE
ON THE MOUND
  • Sam Williams got the start on the mound. He struck out a career-high 12 batters, while allowing six runs on 11 hits and a walk.
  • Gunnar Barnard came out of the bullpen and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits.
  • Kaleb Meeks (L, 1-3) pitched 2.2 innings. He struck out three batters, giving up an unearned run on a hit and a walk.

KEY MOMENTS
  • The Norse took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With runners on first and second, Bacon hit an RBI double to left center to bring home Haueter.
  • Milwaukee went ahead 2-1 in the bottom half of the first. Trevor Schwecke hit an RBI triple, and Joe Vyskocil added an RBI double.
  • The Panthers added to their lead in the third inning. Tyler Bordner hit a three-run homer to give Milwaukee a 5-1 advantage.
  • Haueter led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to make the score 5-2.
  • Milwaukee got the run back in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double by Schwecke, which gave the Panthers a 6-2 lead.
  • The Norse tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Haueter walked to bring in Luty. Moments later, Trey Bowden scored on a wild pitch after entering the game as a pinch runner. Following the wild pitch, Bacon delivered a two-run double to left field to score Haueter and Hedges.
  • Milwaukee broke the tie by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Bordner hit a solo home run, and Colin Kreiter scored after a single by Jack Thelan and a fielding error.
  • Fisher hit a solo home run in the eighth inning for NKU, which cut the Milwaukee lead to 8-7.
  • Doersching tied the game at 8-8 with a solo home run in the top of ninth.
  • The Panthers won the game in the bottom of the ninth. Kreiter scored on an error in the frame to seal the 9-8 victory.

GAME TWO: Milwaukee 15, NKU 2

AT THE PLATE ON THE MOUND
  • Joe Martin (L, 2-1) made his first start of the season. He pitched five innings, allowing seven runs (two earned) on nine hits and four walks. He also struck out two hitters.
  • Noah Richardson came out of the bullpen in the sixth inning. He threw two innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two batters.
  • Tyler Ollier made his eighth appearance of the season. He gave up six runs on six hits and a walk.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Bordner hit an RBI single in the frame.
  • The Panthers added a run in the bottom of the fourth. Oakland Scanlan scored on a passed ball.
  • Milwaukee extended its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth. The biggest hit in the inning came from Devin Rybacki, who hit a three-run triple.
  • NKU got a couple of runs back in the top of the sixth. Murray hit an RBI double to score Bacon, who singled earlier in the inning. Fisher hit a single in the next at-bat to bring home Murray.
  • The Panthers responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Kreiter's RBI single allowed Bordner to score.
  • Mike Ferri's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning allowed Mitch Buban to score, which gave Milwaukee a 9-2 lead.
  • The Panthers tacked on six more runs in the eighth to go ahead 15-2.  

NOTES
  • Williams is the first NKU player to have at least 10 strikeouts in a game since Trey Ganns accomplished the feat against Milwaukee on May 1, 2016.
  • Doersching's home run was his 10th of the season.
