Hils began the then-Northern Kentucky State College men’s basketball program in 1971 and directed the program to many of its biggest victories during the next nine years. His 1978 team defeated Xavier - the program’s first-ever victory against a Division I opponent - en route to the NCAA Division II Tournament. That squad also became the first 20-game winner by posting a 20-8 record and finishing No. 6 in the national rankings. Hils, whose teams competed against powerhouse programs such as Tennessee-Chattanooga, Wright State and Tennessee State on a regular basis, finished his career with a 119-118 record.
